The UK has launched its first purpose-built electric tour boat, the Silver Raven, on the River Thames, marking a significant step towards sustainable tourism. Operated by Woods Tours in partnership with Historic Royal Palaces, the vessel offers a 40-minute guided tour that combines British heritage with modern design, providing panoramic views of London’s iconic landmarks.
The Silver Raven, a 39-metre electric catamaran, is powered by a 720 kW battery bank and was constructed by Pendennis Shipyard in Cornwall. It represents a pioneering example of sustainable British shipbuilding, funded by the UK Government’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition. The boat’s interiors, designed by Kate Woods of the Woods family, incorporate British craftsmanship, featuring eco-leather seating and a pewter bar.
The tour, which departs from Tower Bridge Quay, is the only one created in collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces, offering a narrative written by Martha Howe-Douglas, co-creator of BBC’s Ghosts. “To see the Silver Raven set sail from the Tower, carrying those tales into the future, is very special,” Howe-Douglas remarked.
The launch of the Silver Raven is not only a nod to the Woods family’s five-generation history as Thames Watermen but also a step towards decarbonising the UK’s domestic maritime sector. The vessel’s arrival precedes the development of new electric charging infrastructure at Tower Bridge Quay, set for completion in 2026.
Tickets for the Tower of London River Tour start at $22.50 (£18.50) for adults, with options for combined tickets and onboard refreshments. The tour promises a fully accessible experience, blending history with innovation.
