South East Asia Hotel Investors’ Summit off to a good start

The post South East Asia Hotel Investors’ Summit off to a good start appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

This year’s South East Asia Hotel Investors’ Summit (SEAHIS) opened at the Dust Thani Bangkok today, 23rd June.

Organised by industry association Hoftel, this year’s event brought together key players in the regional hospitality sector who came to hear insights from more than 110 speakers in attendance.

On top of the way the sector has coped in the years following the pandemic, the event will also feature industrial forecasts, as well as points to consider in light of recent geopolitical events.

Coping with current issues

In his introduction to the event, Hoftel chair Simon Allison remarked, “We see strong regional growth tinged with geopolitical instability and uncertainty., the immediate impact of tariffs and longer term fears about international conflict.”

Allison added that the hospitality sector in the region is currently seeing a gradual shift from standard management contracts towards franchise agreements.

Likewise, Asia in general is beginning to move towards white label third-party operators (TPOs), as well as the practical application of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in hospitality sales and marketing.

Indeed, Allison frankly declared: “Our sector never stops developing.”

Attendees for this year came mostly from neighbouring Southeast Asian nations, but also included professionals from Europe, the Middle East, and North America.

Into East Asia

This year’s SEAHIS also saw the introduction of Hoftel’s newest event: the first-ever Japan and North East Asia Hotel Investors’ Summit (JHIS).

Slated for 17th and 18th November of this year, the summit will be hosted by SC Capital, and will also feature insightful talks featuring leading names in the regional sector.

Allison said of the upcoming summit: “Anyone with an interest in investing in Japan or, indeed, South Korea and Taiwan, will find JHIS worth the wait.”

Hong Kong Airlines’ inaugural flight between Hong Kong and Sydney, Australia, departed recently, making it the second local airline to operate this route and providing greater travel options for business, leisure, and transit passengers.

Prior to departure, a launch ceremony was held at the boarding gate of the HKIA. The event was attended by distinguished guests, including Jeff Sun, President of Hong Kong Airlines; Ian McGraw from the Australian Consulate-General in Hong Kong; Carmen Tam and Vivien Yuen from Tourism Australia; Jennifer Tung from Destination New South Wales; and Ricky Chong from Airport Authority Hong Kong. The guests interacted with passengers and presented them with bespoke souvenirs to commemorate the historic occasion.

During the event, Hong Kong Airlines President Jeff Sun stated: “As a full-service local carrier, the launch of our Sydney service marks a significant step in our transformation to an international airline. Sydney is not only a popular destination for leisure and business travel but also one of Australia’s most vital economic hubs. The expansion of the bilateral traffic rights agreement allows us to offer more choice to travellers in both cities, strengthening the connection between them.”

He added, “While Hong Kong Airlines may be a younger brand in the mature Australian market, we are endeavouring in our commitment to providing quality service. We operate this route with our Airbus A330 aircraft, featuring comfortable business and economy class cabins, and strive to deliver a passenger-centric in-flight experience through attentive service and fine dining for our long-haul customers.”

Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton said: “We’re proud to welcome Hong Kong Airlines to Sydney as our 52nd airline partner with its strong reputation for service excellence, efficiency and value. This inaugural service comes on the back of the first expansion in bilateral air traffic rights between Australia and Hong Kong in 19 years and we thank the Albanese Federal Government for its role in enabling this important agreement, which reflects the strength of our longstanding cultural and economic ties.”

NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper, said: “Hong Kong is a priority international market for NSW, with incoming travellers contributing substantially to the NSW visitor economy. The Minns Labor Government has made it very clear; we want to grow our visitor economy and the best way to do this is by increasing airline capacity and unlocking new international markets for NSW. We’ve set our sights on increasing the state’s aviation capacity by 8.5 million seats, and this new Hong Kong route will complement other new routes we’re securing as we work towards landing this goal.”

Wang Yu, Consul General of People’s Republic of China (Sydney), said: “As the second Hong Kong-based airline to operate the Hong Kong–Sydney route, Hong Kong Airlines not only provides a convenient new option for traveling between China and Australia, but also contributes to enhanced exchanges among students, tourists, business professionals and friends from all walks of life. This new service will strengthen Hong Kong and Sydney’s role as vital gateways for the flow of people and goods, injecting fresh momentum into the economic and cultural ties between China and Australia. Its launch will also attract more international travelers to transit through Hong Kong or Sydney, further strengthening both cities’ positions as global aviation hubs and creating new opportunities for trade and investment.

Looking ahead, the Consulate-General of China in Sydney will continue to encourage and support airlines from both China and Australia in restoring or launching new routes based on the principle of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation. We believe that Hong Kong Airlines will continuously enhance its service quality and showcase a good corporate image.”

Exclusive Lounge Access for Connecting Passengers

To celebrate the launch of the new service, passengers travelling on this route and transit at Hong Kong for selected Hong Kong Airlines flights* to Vancouver, Bali, Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Shanghai (Pudong), Haikou, or Sanya, between 20 June and 31 October 2025, will receive complimentary access to the airline’s flagship lounge “Club Autus” at Hong Kong International Airport.

 Expanding Route Network

The launch of the Sydney service indicates Hong Kong Airlines’ overarching strategy for its network expansion. Coupled with the various significant destinations that have been inaugurated or reinstated since the start of the year, including Gold Coast in Australia, Vancouver in Canada, and Hulunbuir in Inner Mongolia of mainland China, the airline has cultivated a more extensive and diversified route map. This further underscores Hong Kong Airlines’ commitment and contribution to the aviation industry’s recovery and long-term development.

In addition to the new routes, the Company also increasea the frequency of services on multiple routes to cater to the summer travel demand. This includes the resumption of seasonal flights to the Maldives and an increase in flights to Da Nang to two per day. Additionally, flights to Shanghai Pudong will be increased to four per day, while services to Hangzhou and Nanjing will become twice day. The variety of flight times available throughout the day provides business, leisure, and transit passengers with the flexibility to plan their itineraries. Thailand is redefining the remote work experience with the launch of the ‘LOCO(AL) Working Space’ campaign, inviting digital nomads, remote professionals, and creative minds to immerse themselves in authentic Thai communities while maintaining global connectivity.

Supported by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, this initiative transforms traditional work environments by offering unique “SPACE TONES” that blend emotional value with local authenticity. Whether it’s the serene mountains of Chiang Mai, the cultural alleys of Bangkok, or the tranquil islands of Phuket, Thailand presents curated environments that foster productivity, inspiration, and well-being.

Naka Yai Island, Phuket

Chiang Mai: Valley Space

Nestled in Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai offers a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, making it a haven for digital nomads. Beyond the city’s vibrant co-working spaces and artisan markets, remote workers can retreat to peaceful mountain communities such as:

  • Mae Klang Luang: a serene village nestled in the Doi Inthanon National Park, it offers a peaceful retreat where visitors can immerse themselves in the simplicity of rural Thai life. The village is famous for its lush terraced rice fields, vibrant flower gardens, cool climate, and the home of Karen tribe.
  • Mae Mae: is a lesser-known slice of Chiang Mai, known for its peaceful vibe, lush green hills, authentic local life, and its growing in eco-tourism. It’s all about slow mornings with local coffee, homestays run by families who genuinely care about the land, and walking trails that feel untouched. Mae Mae is hidden gem offering immersive experiences in nature and local traditions
  • Mae Sa Noi: is a quiet, scenic corner of Chiang Mai known for its serene waterfalls, lush forest trails, and local elephant experiences. Unlike tourist-heavy spots, it offers a more natural, intimate vibe and the chance to see elephants bathing in the Mae Sa Noi stream. It’s a favorite for those seeking a relaxation retreat into Chiang Mai’s green heart, where nature feels personal and unfiltered.

In the city, co-working spaces like Alt_ChiangMai and Alt_PingRiver provide fully furnished accommodations and shared amenities, creating environments that seamlessly merge comfort and community.

Bangkok: Classic Space

Thailand’s capital is a dynamic metropolis where history and modernity coexist. In the heart of the city lies Trok Dilokchan, a cultural alleyway that bridges heritage and contemporary lifestyles. Here, digital nomads can explore century-old architecture, enjoy coffee in restored shophouses, and discover co-working spaces filled with character.

Phuket: Island Space

For those dreaming of working with the sound of waves in the background, Phuket offers idyllic island settings:

  • Ko Lon: Ko Lon has a laid-back vibe where you can find quiet beaches, friendly locals, and a slower pace that helps you focus and recharge. The island is known for its crystal-clear waters, stunning coral reefs, and fresh seafood—ideal for unwinding after a productive workday. Ko Lon offers the perfect balance of work and escape; it keeps you productive without feeling plugged in to the chaos of city life.
  • Ko Naka Yai: just a 15-minute boat ride off the east coast from Phuket, known for its secluded location, and glassy bay. The island’s tiny size means you’ll know every hidden cove and cliff-top view by sunset. With no crowds or traffic to slow you down, Ko Naka Yai lets you work at your own pace—then reward yourself with uninterrupted nature, all within steps of your bungalow. Make this tranquil slice of paradise your base for productivity and play.

In Phuket Old Town, colonial architecture meets trendy cafés and art-filled streets, providing remote workers with a colorful, creative space to call home.

The campaign is anchored in the “5 Must Do in Thailand” experience pillars, encouraging nomads to not only work remotely but to truly live locally. From tasting regional dishes and trying age-old crafts to buying community-made goods, exploring nature, and seeking inner peace, each destination invites nomads to craft a personalized lifestyle aligned with their values.

Tourism contributed 8.9 percent to the Philippine economy in 2024

The post Tourism contributed 8.9 percent to the Philippine economy in 2024 appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reports that the tourism sector contributed about 8.9 percent to the country’s 2024 gross domestic product (GDP).

In its Philippine Tourism Satellite Account (PTSA) report released yesterday, 19th June, the PSA pointed out that the tourism’s share in 2024 was up from the 8.7 percent shown in 2023.

Released annually, the PTSA reports all visitor spending in accommodation services, food and beverage serving services, transport services, travel agencies and other reservation services, entertainment and recreation services, and shopping, among others.

The Tourism Direct Gross Value Added (TDGVA), an indicator that measures the value added of the tourism industry, amounted to PHP2.35 trillion last year, 11.2 percent higher compared with the PHP2.12 trillion in 2023.

Tourism generated more employment in 2024

Employment in the tourism sector also posted a 6.1 percent increase to 6.75 million, compared with the 6.37 million in 2023.

According to a PSA spokesperson: “The share of employment in tourism industries to the total employment in the country was recorded at 13.8 percent in 2024.”

Agoda: Long weekends are boosting travel in the Asia Pacific

The post Agoda: Long weekends are boosting travel in the Asia Pacific appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Digital travel platform Agoda reports that Asia’s diverse and regular stream of public holidays is proving to be a boost to the Asia Pacific (APAC) travel industry as Asian tourists look to maximize their leisure time.

Per the platform’s latest report, Asian travelers looking to travel long weekends are largely opting to stay in the APAC region, highlighting an opportunity for hoteliers to capture rising demand for more frequent, short stays.

Senior vice-president for supply Andrew Smith opined that the opportunity for hotels and airlines to secure bookings and incentivize travelers to extend their trips and add ancillary items to boost revenue over long weekends has never been greater.

Smith said: “Hotels should ensure they are using the right data to target the hottest consumers from across the Asia Pacific region and ensure that their service offerings are tailored to their regional tastes. For example, catering for visitors with large families by ensuring they are able to access larger and joined rooms for family travel.”

Long weekends are for travelling

Agoda saw an 80 percent month-on-month increase in accommodation searches from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore ahead of the Eid long weekend.

Destinations of choice for the period were Japan, Thailand, China, South Korea and Taiwan.

There was a similar trend during the Songkran long weekend in Thailand, with Hong Kong, Osaka, Shanghai and Seoul proving to be top choices.

The recent long weekend in Vietnam, which covered Liberation Day and Labour Day, saw Bangkok, Singapore, Tokyo and Seoul being the most searched destinations.

How can hotels make the most out of long weekends?

By proactively offering packages that cater to long weekend stays and micro-vacations, hotels can capitalize on these trends.

Among the strategies proposed by Agoda are:

  • Focus on Content Marketing: Publish blog posts or guides about “Top Things to Do in [Your City] Over the Long Weekend.” Highlight local events, hidden gems, and places that are within easy reach. Use SEO best practices to ensure content ranks for relevant long weekend searches.
  • Launch long Weekend and “maxi-break” packages: Partner with travel platforms like Agoda and loyalty platforms to promote extended stay offers such as “Stay 4 Nights, Pay for 3”. This aligns with the growing trend of consumers turning public holidays into mini vacations.
  • Push Ancillary items that help guests maximize shorter trips: Include value-adds like late check-out, complimentary breakfast, or tickets to local attractions.
  • Design wellness and immersive local packages – With Asia’s wellness tourism market projected to hit US$156.85 billion this year, hoteliers can attract high-value guests by offering digital detox retreats, spa-and-stay bundles, and locally sourced culinary experiences that can be enjoyed over a three day stay.

Oceania Cruises’ Red Ginger expands menu with creative Nikkei dishes

The post Oceania Cruises’ Red Ginger expands menu with creative Nikkei dishes appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Culinary and destination-centric cruise line Oceania Cruises adds 12 new, flavourful, and creative Nikkei dishes to its signature Pan-Asian restaurant Red Ginger.

This menu expansion brings a vibrant fusion of Peruvian flavors and refined Japanese culinary techniques and tastes to sea.

The innovative menu items recently debuted aboard Oceania Vista and will be available on the line’s newest ship, Oceania Allura which launches next month.

The new Nikkei dishes will be added to the rest of the fleet by early 2026.

Oceania Cruises’ chief luxury officer Jason Montague said: “The carefully crafted new Nikkei menu items further augment the ongoing evolution of our driving philosophy of serving The Finest Cuisine at Sea. Our industry-leading culinary team is constantly seeking to introduce our well-traveled guests to new experiences and flavors, while honoring our commitment to culinary excellence,” said Jason Montague, Chief Luxury Officer of Oceania Cruises.

Executive culinary director Alexis Quaretti added: “This new Nikkei offering is a tangible example of the magic that emerges when cultures intertwine. Our passion for culinary innovation is fueled by constantly listening to our guests, noting their ever-expanding palates and deep curiosity to try new dishes and taste profiles. The introduction of these new Nikkei dishes is a result of our guests’ appetite for bold new flavors, and this is just the beginning of even more exciting developments on the horizon.”

What exactly is Nikkei cuisine?

Nikkei cuisine traces its origins to the late 19th century, when Japanese immigrants settled in Peru.

Over time, immigrants missing the taste of home adapted traditional Japanese recipes with native Peruvian ingredients, resulting in a distinctive taste marked by fresh seafood, bright citrus, soy-based sauces, and spicy peppers.

Unlike many long-established culinary traditions, Nikkei cuisine is refreshingly flexible as it honors customs and simultaneously embraces experimentation, an ethos that aligns perfectly with Oceania Cruises.

The cruise line is deepening its guests’ understanding of Nikkei food through this new menu rollout, an initiative supported by chef Gustavo Sugay, who brings more than 20 years of experience preparing this dynamic cuisine.
