Philippines to begin issuing digital nomad visas

Philippine President Ferdinand R Marcos Jnr signed an executive order authorising the issuance of digital nomad visas on Thursday, 24th April.

Executive Order No 86 gives the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to issue digital nomad visas to non-immigrant foreigners who wish to visit the Philippines whilst working remotely.

This initiative seeks to drive spending on the part of foreign travellers to the country and to boost tourism activities throughout off-peak seasons.

Tourism secretary Christina Frasco lauded the move, referring to it as a progressive policy reflecting the national government’s strong commitment to boost the country’s tourism landscape via innovation.

In a statement released on Friday, 25th April, Frasco declared: “Allowing digital nomads the opportunity to stay longer in the country will spur tourism activities and increase visitor spending. Not only do digital nomads help mitigate seasonal fluctuations in tourism by visiting during off-peak times and providing a more steady economic flow, but these types of international visitors also bring diverse perspectives and cultures, enriching our host communities.”

Where nomads wander

Among the Philippines’ most popular workation destinations in the country are Boracay, Siargao, Cebu, Palawan, and La Union, all of which have great appeal among both backpackers and digital nomads alike.

Frasco said: “The digital nomad visa will not only strengthen the growth of established destinations, but also unlock new opportunities for even the most remote tourist sites and local government units to shine on the global stage.”

She added that her department stands ready to work hand in hand with the DFA, the Department of Justice, Bureau of Immigration, Bureau of Internal Revenue, and all other concerned agencies to ensure the smooth and effective implementation of the new initiative.

Frasco further pointed out that such measures for future-ready tourism are bound to uplift local communities via meaningful livelihood for residents.

Once the initiative is implemented, the Philippines joins Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia among the regional hubs for digital nomads.

What travellers need to know

Foreigners eligible for this type of visa must be:

  • At least 18 years old;
  • Must show proof of remote work using digital technology;
  • Must show proof of sufficient income generated outside the Philippines;
  • Must show proof of no criminal record;
  • Must have health insurance valid for the period covering the validity of the visa; 
  • Must be a national of a country that already offers similar visas to Filipinos and where the Philippines has a Foreign Service Post;
  • Must not pose a threat to the internal or external security of the Philippines; and
  • Must not be employed in the Philippines.

Pilot implementation of the digital nomad visa programme begins within 60 days from the time the Executive Order takes effect.

Foreigners who qualify for the program may stay in the country for a maximum of one year.

Also, the visa may be renewed for the same duration and the holder may be granted multiple entry privileges during its validity.

The 13th Macao International Travel Expo (MITE) has proven to be the event’s biggest to date.

The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) reports that, on top of the 755 travel and tourism businesses represented at the event and 500 buyers in attendance, visitors get to browse at a record-breaking 1,502 booths set up across three halls of The Venetian Macau.

Speaking at the evening reception for partners and participants, MGTO director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes: “This year, we have made MITE a much more international affair. This edition has brought together both old and new participants from the Greater China Area, from Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania, as well as the Americas.”

Fernandes added that MITE offers novel opportunities for all participants, as well as establishing a premier platform for both tourism professionals and consumers alike.

Leveraging a city’s advantages

The MGTO director further pointed out that Macao strives to put up an innovative programme every year.

She said: “The MITE programme leverages our city’s unique advantages as a platform to foster connectivity between Macao, Mainland China, and the international market.”

From augmented reality to unique mobility solutions, this year’s Macao International Travel Expo (MITE) put innovation in the spotlight through its dedicated space for edutourism, a fusion of travel and learning, along with several unique features that highlighted the synergy between tourism and technology.

At MITE 2025, the EduTourism Hive is significantly larger than it was in previous iterations of the event, and visitors found themselves awed by the range of ideas presented.

While tie-ups between academic institutions, museums, and the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) were in play, many were drawn to an interactive demonstration of augmented reality (AR) / virtual reality (VR) as a means of enhancing a traveller’s experience of a given destination.

Especially useful in recreating destinations as they were in their original state, AR/VR tech is already a given in Macao’s tourism scene as local provider IC Art offered guests a virtual tour of the SAR’s iconic Ruins of St Paul back in its glory days as the Mater Dei Church.

In a virtual exhibition held last month, visitors were awestruck as modern technology restored what is known to be a last wall standing into a glorious example of Portuguese architecture in the east 400 years into the territory’s colonial past.

Based on this and similar exhibitions held overseas, the potential of AR/VR tech could also extend into sustainable tourism, as it would enable people to experience attractions in endangered or compromised environments in a safer, more environmentally responsible manner.

Is this a better way to move around?

Another innovative solution presented at MITE 2025 takes the concept of electric transportation to the next level.

On display in the centre of the EduTourism Hive was a prototype of a next-generation single person flyer.

Essentially similar to the personal air taxis that are now doing test flights in Europe, this innovative take on urban mobility offers a more sustainable way of getting from one place to another without adding to the increasingly heavy traffic seen in too many thoroughfares the world over.

The prototype and similar vehicles boast that these are certainly kinder to the environment as they are electric and may be recharged, exude no harmful emissions, and thus leave a significantly smaller carbon footprint.

However, it should be noted that, as of press time, there are two things standing in the way of these solo flyers: safety, of course, and the potential cost.

It is worth noting that prototypes currently being tested in Europe are being pitched to ride-hailing firms; so we may just see a shift from a four-wheeler Grab or GoJek to one that easily and speedily flies you to work without needing to catch a bus, cab, or even a commuter train.

Virtual hosting in a completely different context 

But perhaps one of the most visible innovations seen at this year’s MITE is the fact that the opening ceremony was hosted by not one, but two humanoid AI anchors.

Alongside these avatars, simultaneous translation of the speeches delivered in Mandarin during the opening ceremony appeared as running text on the screens mounted onstage.

Granted that the translations were imperfect as there is only so much a listening ear (human or machine) can process, it made for an impressive beginning to an event that continues to cast the spotlight on an industry that is every bit as dynamic and evolutionary as the work of scientists and developers in our rapidly changing world.

The 13th Macao International Travel Expo (MITE) officially opened today, 25th April, at The Venetian Macau.

The event serves as a way of bringing together tourism boards from around the world, along with travel professionals seeking to expand their networks with peers and those working in related fields

What is notable is that attendance at this year’s exposition is up 50 percent from last year’s numbers, clocking in at 755 travel and tourism enterprises participating from over 70 nations.

Likewise, the event welcomed around 500 global travel buyers covering a diverse range of markets.

Breakthroughs and bridges among nations 

In her opening remarks, Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes pointed out how MITE and similar events are key to the ongoing progress stemming from the Chinese government’s 14th Five-Year Plan and the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR)’s own second Five-Year Plan.

Fernandes said: “MITE 2025 embraces the vision to attain innovative and quality enhancement through numerous initiatives. It also serves as a way of highlighting Macao’s strengths, as well as a platform that facilitates cooperation and the exchange of knowledge among tourism professionals and their peers from related industries here and throughout the rest of the world.”

She added that Macao has, over the past several years, accumulated a foundation of experience that enables cross-platform integration and promotes collaboration between Macanese travel professionals and their global counterparts.

An ongoing exchange 

Kang Lun of China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism likewise cited the robustness of the two-way exchange between Macao and the Chinese Mainland.

He pointed out how the number of mainland tourists making their way to Macao has risen significantly over the past few years, and the SAR has been actively diversifying its tourism offerings to appeal to a broader spectrum of travellers.

As tourism is a two-way exchange, Kang also lauded the event as a way of showing off the richness of Mainland China’s cultural diversity to potential Macanese tourists.

Paired with Macao’s unique charm, the attractions offered by the Chinese Mainland promise to be a potent draw to global travellers.

Mr. Michael Marshall, CEO, stated after the meeting that the 2024 performance report reflected another strong year for SHR, with total revenue reaching THB 10.35 billion — a 7% year-on-year increase and the highest in the company’s history, and net profit of THB 133.9 million, soaring at an impressive rate of 55% from 2023 level. As a result, the meeting approved a dividend payment of THB 0.03 per share, THB 107,809,200, which doubles the previous year’s level and represents 41.30% of the net profit, as per the separate financial statements after deducting legal reserves, in line with the company’s dividend policy. The recorded date for shareholders entitled to receive the dividend was set for 14 March 2025, with the payment scheduled for 8 May 2025.

Looking ahead to 2025, the company is committed to executing its business development plan to strengthen its investment portfolio, enhance service standards, and drive sustainable growth. Key strategies include:

Portfolio Efficiency Improvement Strategy
The company plans to renovate three additional properties in the United Kingdom, located in key tourist and economic hubs, to enhance service standards and profit potential. It will also pursue an Asset Rotation Strategy, selling non-core assets that do not align with SHR’s growth strategy and reinvesting in high-potential properties, in line with the diversification strategy.

Defensive Renovation Projects
To maintain its quality of services and competitiveness, SHR plans to renovate certain properties in its portfolio during off-peak seasons to minimise disruption and ensure readiness for the next peak season.

Products and Services Development
The company will launch SAii Beach Club across all SAii Hotels & Resorts, accompanied by a unique brand-specific food and beverage menu to boost non-room revenue. It also plans to enhance MICE services and expand its sustainable event management under the EIC Certification standard.
