Future of Travel: Bolder adventures with a bigger safety net

The post Future of Travel: Bolder adventures with a bigger safety net  appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

The future of travel may include more journeys for longer durations to increasingly remote destinations as travellers’ confidence in their connectedness and ability to be rescued increases with the widespread use of satellite communications devices, according to the world’s most experienced travellers responding to the Global Rescue Spring 2024 survey.

Eight out of 10 respondents (82%) would feel safer with a smartphone enabled with satellite connection abilities, according to the survey results.

“Nearly half (49%) said they like knowing they can always call for help if needed while more than a third (37%) reported that having satellite communications capabilities if cell coverage is unavailable gives their family, friends or colleagues peace of mind,” said Dan Richards, CEO of The Global Rescue Companies, the world’s leading provider of medical, security, evacuation and travel risk management services, and a member of the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

One out of 10 (12%) said they had lost cell coverage before during travel, and it concerned them that they were unable to communicate with others, especially in an emergency.

Most travelers (81%) have already reported they are planning three or more trips in 2024, with 40% of respondents committing to three or more international trips. Nearly a quarter (23%) of respondents said that since the pandemic ended, they are planning to stay longer on at least one of their international trips in 2024. A nearly equal percentage (22%) of respondents said they plan more adventurous, immersive trips in 2024.

“Add to those survey results the race among wireless service companies and smartphone manufacturers to provide satellite communications capabilities for users, and travelers have a bigger safety net to travel more boldly in the future,” Richards said.

The traveller frontier is expanding. Off-the-grid adventures could include risking a venomous bite while exploring Brazil’s Snake Island, exploring remote south pacific islands like Vanuatu, or braving the deadly heat in Ethiopia’s Danakil Desert.  These locations will likely become more popular as travellers’ confidence in their ability to call for help increases. While 80% of respondents don’t want to travel to space, a full 20% do.

“People were born to travel, explore new places, and take part in transformative experiences,” Richards said. “Improved safety and security protections make traveling boldly more accessible.”

IAGTO Awards recognition for Ba Na Hills boosts Vietnam Golf Coast

The post IAGTO Awards recognition for Ba Na Hills boosts Vietnam Golf Coast appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

Central Vietnam’s status as an elite golf hub was reaffirmed last month as Bana Hills Golf Club was named “Golf Course of the Year in Vietnam” at the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) Awards.

With championship layouts designed by legends such as Luke Donald (Ba Na Hills Golf Club), Sir Nick Faldo (Laguna Golf Lang Co), and Colin Montgomerie (Montgomerie Links), Central Vietnam has emerged as one of Asia’s top destinations for play.

The region’s glowing reputation was burnished once again at the 2024 IAGTO Awards held in Abu Dhabi as Ba Na Hills Golf Club added to its string of honours.

“We are truly proud to be named ‘Golf Course of the Year in Vietnam’,” said Gary Dixon, General Manager of Ba Na Hills Golf Club. “This award not only highlights the club’s achievements but also puts a positive spotlight on the entire Vietnam Golf Coast, reinforcing Central Vietnam’s status as one of Asia’s premier golf tourism destinations.”

With its vibrant cities, incredible beaches and hotels complemented by an enviable infrastructure, the region is regarded by many observers as the continent’s most complete golf destination: a fact reflected in a multitude of accolades for its clubs.

Laguna Golf Lang Co and Ba Na Hills Golf Club, linchpins alongside Montgomerie Links of the Vietnam Golf Coast (VGC) — a destination marketing organization that links Central Vietnam’s best signature golf layouts — were named among the top 11 golf resorts in Asia last year.

The two clubs were among the superstars at the top of the leaderboard in a list compiled by Golf.com, one of the world’s leading golf titles, encompassing top golf destinations in Korea, China, Thailand and Indonesia. Not only were the two clubs ranked among the cream of the region’s golf resorts, but their inclusion in the Asia list also guaranteed them spots in the overall Top 100 Golf Resorts in the World standings.

“Vietnam’s reputation as a golf destination has never been brighter and we are confident that the cluster of courses in the centre of the country represents the jewel in its crown,” said Stephen Banks, Director of Golf at Laguna Lang Co. “The courses offer a wide variety of experiences to golfers. You can play seaside coastal golf one day and enjoy terrific mountain vistas the next day.”

Central Vietnam’s burgeoning reputation on the global stage was reflected during 2023, a year that saw the total number of rounds played on its courses reach an all-time high.

The key players in the VGC are gunning for further accolades to boost the area with Montgomerie Links, Ba Na Hills Golf Club, and Laguna Golf Lang Co all nominated for the title of “Vietnam’s Best Course” at the 2024 World Golf Awards.

“Success breeds success, so it is fantastic for all of us that the clubs in Central Vietnam are earning wider recognition,” said Le Vo Hoang Van, club manager at Montgomerie Links where Colin Montgomerie has fashioned old-world design elements into a challenging layout. “With all these internationally accoladed golf courses in one place, it’s a great chance for golfers from all over the world to come and decide which is their favourite.”

Collinson expands partnership with Singapore Airlines (SIA) to offer LoungeKey Pass

The post Collinson expands partnership with Singapore Airlines (SIA) to offer LoungeKey Pass appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

Collinson, a global leader in the provision of airport experiences, loyalty and customer engagement solutions, and operator of LoungeKey, announced its expanded partnership with Singapore Airlines (SIA). This partnership will provide businesses in SIA’s HighFlyer programme access to LoungeKey Pass, a digital voucher that enables users to visit an airport lounge or enjoy a travel experience without the need for registration, physical cards or membership.

SIA’s HighFlyer programme allows businesses to enjoy preferential airfares and earn HighFlyer points when their employees travel for work. The points can in turn be used to offset the cost of future travel, or to access rewards. With this partnership, businesses in SIA’s HighFlyer programme across all four membership tiers will be able to redeem a LoungeKey Pass for every 8,000 HighFlyer points earned on the company account. New businesses who sign up to be part of the HighFlyer programme can also redeem a pass as a milestone reward upon meeting a threshold of nett flown expenditure. Businesses can then reward individual employees with a LoungeKey Pass via their Highflyer account, to be enjoyed during their next trip.

According to Collinson’s 2023 Asia Pacific consumer insights report, there is a growing appetite among consumers for travel-related rewards and benefits that enable positive experiences when they travel. With LoungeKey Pass, businesses under SIA’s HighFlyer programme can leverage this opportunity to enhance their corporate wellness initiatives and deepen overall employee engagement.

“Global business travel spend is expected to surpass 2019 levels this year, resulting in many employees taking to the skies on behalf of their organisations. Our research has shown that consumers today place a high-value on travel-related benefits and rewards. In turn, providing access to airport lounges and travel experiences as part of a wider corporate travel proposition is an ideal way to support the well-being of business travellers; helping them to feel supported and valued by their employer while on the road,” said Todd Handcock, Global Chief Commercial Officer and Asia Pacific President, Collinson International. “We are delighted to be expanding our partnership with Singapore Airlines and look forward to welcoming businesses under the SIA HighFlyer programme, and their employees, to our expansive and diverse LoungeKey Pass network of airport lounges and travel experiences globally.”

Designed with flexibility in mind, LoungeKey Pass will enable businesses under the SIA HighFlyer programme to access over 1,500 airport lounges and travel experiences in over 700 airports in 145 countries. This includes experiences such as spa and sleep pods, gaming, as well as dining offerings.

Online booking for Mount Fuji climb to open on May 20

The post Online booking for Mount Fuji climb to open on May 20 appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

Visitors who plan to climb Mount Fuji will be able to book their places online from May 20 and make an advance payment of the mandatory ¥2,000 ($13) climbing fee. Climbers can sign up through the new online system up until a day before their climb. After completing payment, they will receive a QR code for them to scan at the entrance of the popular Yoshida trail in Yamanashi Prefecture. As informed by a news report in The Japan Times.

Each user will be able to submit payments for up to 100 people in a single transaction.

There will also be an option to make a voluntary ¥1,000 donation — which goes toward the mountain’s preservation — on the official website for climbing Mount Fuji when they make bookings.

While online reservations are not mandatory, they guarantee entry to the trail on the intended day of climbing.

Local authorities are limiting the maximum number of climbers to 4,000 per day.

Climbers without a reservation can still enter the trail if there are available slots upon arrival at the entrance.

The new online reservation system aims to streamline the process of climbing Mount Fuji and give climbers peace of mind, Yamanashi Gov. Kotaro Nagasaki said in a news release on Monday.

“We hope that (everyone) will actively use the reservation system and enjoy a safe and comfortable climb up Mount Fuji,” he added.

In addition, the Yoshida trail, the most popular of four trails up Mount Fuji, will be closed from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m. each day to prevent those without a cabin reservation from engaging in “bullet climbing” — climbing the 3,776-meter peak in one go to watch the sunrise without staying overnight on the mountain.

Yamanashi Prefecture, one of the areas in which the mountain stands, announced in February that it would charge each climber a ¥2,000 entry fee from this summer to address overtourism, a problem faced by Japan’s most iconic landmark and its surrounding area as well as other popular tourist destinations in the country after the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.

In Fujikawaguchiko, a town at the foot of the Yoshida trail where a local convenience store have become a popular photo spot due to the view of Mount Fuji from there, a 2.5-meter black barrier is being put up to obstruct the view in response to tourists’ misbehavior, such as ignoring traffic when taking pictures.

Last year, a total of 221,322 climbers passed the eighth station near the summit, close to pre-pandemic levels, according to data from the environment ministry. Of these, 62% climbed the mountain via the Yoshida trail.
