Finland named ‘World’s Happiest Country’ for the 8th consecutive year

The post Finland named ‘World’s Happiest Country’ for the 8th consecutive year appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

For the eighth year in a row, Finland has been named the happiest country in the world by the annual ‘United Nations World Happiness Report’, holding the top title since 2018. Fresh insights from the World Happiness Report 2025 highlight the importance of social connections as well as caring and sharing.

While many speculate about Finland’s secret to happiness, one key factor stands out: the sauna. While sauna is not the sole contributor to Finns’ continuous happiness, it is one of the most essential and unifying factors, with 90% of Finns bathing in a sauna at least once a week.

Visit Finland explores this connection through the Finnish Sauna Happiness Hierarchy.

Health & Wellbeing:

Sauna plays a significant role in the well-being of Finns, offering benefits like muscle relaxation, improved sleep, and better circulation. Sauna isn’t just a pastime; it’s a national treasure. Even Finland’s ancient epic, the Kalevala, references a God of Sauna, called upon to steam away sickness. As Finns like to say, “The sauna is the poor man’s pharmacy.” No prescription needed—just heat, steam, and a little Finnish magic.

Tip: Experience traditional sauna treatments at Sipoonjoki Sauna, which includes a smoke sauna just outside Helsinki.

Safe space:

Throughout history, the sauna has served as Finland’s trusted place of comfort and safety. Historically, significant life events such as childbirth and important decisions have taken place within its warmth. In the sauna, everyone is equal. Shared sauna experiences encourage deep conversations, social connections, and a sense of community. Ultimately, the sauna remains a vital cultural institution, offering solace and security, and anchoring the collective spirit of Finland.

Tip: Visit Rajaportin sauna in Tampere, Finland’s oldest operating public sauna.

Connection & Community:

Finnish saunas are communal spaces where families and friends gather, reinforcing social bonds and a sense of belonging. Sharing a sauna promotes openness, equality, and connection with others. Public saunas provide a space for people of all ages to meet and chat about any contemporary topic. Public saunas can be found in every city, public pool, gym, and even some workplaces and restaurants.

Tip: Check out Sompasauna in Helsinki, a popular spot for both local sauna enthusiasts and visitors alike.

Mental Resilience & Finnish ‘Sisu’:

Sauna rituals, often paired with ice dips or birch whisking, enhance emotional well-being and resilience. The sauna fosters self-confidence and resilience, embodying the Finnish concept of “sisu,” representing inner strength and grit.

Tip: Find your inner “sisu” by taking a dip in the refreshing water of Lake Littoinen in Turku’s Archipelago and enjoy the heat of the saunas in Järvelä.

Creativity & Innovation:

With approximately 3 million saunas for a population of 5.5 million, Finland is home to some of the world’s most contemporary, innovative, and quirky saunas.

Tip: Try the Arctic Sauna Experience at Rovaniemi’s Apukka Resort featuring a a sauna made from ice.

The Finnish sauna has a vital connection with many of the key reasons behind the nation’s happiness – from physiological benefits to psychological needs related to social connection, esteem, and self-actualization.

“Finnish sauna is a sanctuary of happiness: it is good for your health, it is a safe space to relax and wash off the stress, it is taking care of social needs and feeling of belonging to community, it is an integral part of national character and a source of creativity,” Heli Jimenez, Senior Director, International Marketing at Visit Finland, sums up.

Delta partners with JetZero to design the future of air travel

The post Delta partners with JetZero to design the future of air travel appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Delta Air Lines is partnering with JetZero on a revolutionary, more sustainable aircraft that looks and feels like nothing flying today’s commercial skies. The California-based start-up’s vastly more fuel efficient blended-wing-body (BWB) design is at the center of the collaboration and is one facet of Delta’s ongoing journey to advance industry innovation, drive down cost through increased fuel-savings, elevate the customer experience and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

On the heels of the airline celebrating 100 years of flight, the partnership underscores Delta’s commitment to shape what the future of flight looks like for centuries to come. Delta’s formal partnership with JetZero comes after the start-up received a grant from the U.S. Air Force in 2023 to help facilitate building a full-scale demonstrator for first flight in 2027. Delta will play a crucial role in the development by providing the operational expertise to help make this technology viable.

“Working with JetZero to realize an entirely new airframe and experience for customers and employees is bold and important work to advance the airline industry’s fuel saving initiatives and innovation goals,” said Amelia DeLuca, Delta’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “While Delta is focused on doing what we can today to address our carbon footprint, it’s critical we also work with a variety of partners to advance revolutionary technologies, like JetZero’s blended-wing-body aircraft, to solve for a significant portion of future aviation emissions.”

As the newest member of Delta’s Sustainable Skies Lab, JetZero has the direct support of the global carrier’s world-class talent and access to its industry-leading operations. That includes the right maintenance and operational footprints to prove out and accelerate the commercialization of the BWB airframe technology – which is expected to be up to 50% more fuel efficient than the tube-and-wing designs1 customers experience today. The partnership with JetZero marks Delta’s fourth “revolutionary fleet” partnership outlined in its Sustainability Roadmap launched in 2023: a groundbreaking, transparent roadmap by which Delta aims to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

The leading global airline will also help design an interior experience of the future to ensure a best-in-class customer and employee experience. The uniquely shaped airframe, that differs from today’s tube-and-wing shape, offers endless possibilities. With Delta at the helm of designing the interiors, customers can expect changes that enhance their experience, including dedicated overhead bin space for each passenger, accessible seats and lavatories, and fewer rows.

“JetZero is working to change the world by bringing to market an aircraft that aims to fly this decade and make immediate and marked progress toward reducing airline energy costs, and the associated emissions,” said Tom O’Leary, JetZero cofounder and CEO. “The ability to realize such significant efficiency gains in the near future meaningfully impacts the industry’s commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and will serve as the foundation on which other technologies and efficiencies can be realized. Delta was one of the first carriers to partner with us, supporting us behind the scenes since 2023, and we look forward to their continued support of our program through their deep knowledge and expertise.”

Evolution of the blended wing body

The revolutionary BWB aircraft, first tested and demonstrated in the 1990s by NASA and Stanford University to be safe and efficient, will also be capable of using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) when it goes into service, since it will use today’s engine propulsion systems.

Aircraft manufacturers have made incredible advancements to increase overall commercial aircraft fuel efficiency since passenger jets were first introduced. In fact, fleet fuel efficiency is estimated to be 80% better than 50 years ago. At the same time, Delta has continued making fleet modifications – like adding winglets and lightweight landing gear to further the effort. In fact, Delta’s cross-divisional Carbon Council saved a cumulative 40+ million gallons of fuel in 20242 due to operational efficiencies, fleet modifications, and reduced weight on board. But the industry agrees that more is needed, and quickly.

This U.S. Air Force’s grant, coupled with support from partners such as Northrop Grumman and Scaled Composites, and ongoing coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, further validates for major aviation stakeholders that the BWB design is a solution within reach. Delta has informally partnered with JetZero since 2021 on how to best commercialize the aircraft as part of the start-up’s grant application.

JetZero’s BWB aircraft are expected to include a slate of revolutionary benefits for consumers and for environmental sustainability including:

  • The BWB is up to 50% more fuel efficient than conventional tube-and-wing airframes on the market due to the design, which creates less drag, provides more lifting surface area, provides even load and lift distribution, and overall is markedly lighter in weight.
  • Capacity to carry more than 250 customers – which is similar to existing widebody aircraft – to provide the level of capacity and range needed to meet growing travel demand.
  • Less noise. With engines mounted on top of the aircraft, BWB aircraft are expected to be significantly quieter than existing aircraft.
  • The potential to fit into existing airport infrastructure and offer faster turn-around times – areas Delta is exploring and advising on.
  • Utilizing SAF to further decrease lifecycle carbon emissions.

Delta believes in connecting people to a more sustainable future of travel. The global airline’s ongoing work to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 while delivering a more sustainable future of travel focuses on what we fly, how we fly and the fuel we use. While we’re making changes that are within our control today, like reducing fuel consumption across our operations, Delta is also working on long-term solutions like advancing sustainable aviation fuel to fully decarbonize its operations and the industry.

World Bank shows how integrated tourism is boosting communities in Indonesia

The post World Bank shows how integrated tourism is boosting communities in Indonesia appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

The Indonesia Tourism Development Project (ITDP), a joint initiative between the Indonesian government and the World Bank, is enabling communities in Lombok and Lake Toba to improve their livelihoods.

The joint initiative centres on sustainable tourism development that benefits both people and the environment, making the most out of Indonesia’s exceptional natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage.

In areas like Lombok and Lake Toba, ITDP’s initiatives are improving infrastructure, expanding access to resources, and empowering local entrepreneurs.

Through training and capacity-building, communities are ensuring that tourism growth benefits both people and the environment while preserving cultural and natural heritage.

Dealing with key issues

As Lake Toba and Lombok offer unique landscapes and cultural traditions, these are ideal for development as prime tourist destinations.

However, both areas are dealing with issues that include poor infrastructure, environmental degradation, and the need for sustainable tourism to benefit local communities without harming natural resources.

Under the ITDP, the Indonesian government developed the Integrated Tourism Master Plan (ITMP) to serve as a blueprint for sustainable tourism development.

While Lombok’s ITMP was completed and enacted earlier, ITMPs for other destinations were finalised during the project.

Their implementation continues as part of broader efforts to strengthen sustainable tourism development.

How ITMPs help

The ITMPs create a balanced approach to tourism  that respects the environment and local culture while empowering communities to lead their own development.

By incorporating infrastructure development with environmental conservation and cultural preservation, the ITMPs guide key tourism projects in regions like Gili-Senggigi, South Beach, Mataram, and Rinjani. This integrated approach ensures that tourism growth aligns with long-term sustainability goals for local communities and the environment.

Key improvements include road upgrades, such as the Pemenang-Bayan-Sembalun road and water supply systems in Senaru, Sembalun, and Mandalika.

These improvements enhance infrastructure and help preserve the natural resources that draw visitors to the region.

As of end-2024, ITDP projections showed that these improvements stand to benefit 1.6 million people in Lombok alone, enhancing the sustainable development efforts across the island.

With time Indian aviation’s critical mass will be in India: Campbell Wilson

The post With time Indian aviation’s critical mass will be in India: Campbell Wilson appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Speaking at the Skift India Forum Campbell Wilson, CEO, Air India said that the fundamental constraint for Indian aviation in recent years was not deploying more capacity. Local carriers now have more than 1,000 aircraft on order. Air India and IndiGo  are ordering widebody aircraft for international operations, as well as hundreds of smaller jets.

“I think that’s a good thing because it’s bringing the focus of Indian travel back onto Indian soil, and all of the spin-off economic benefits that brings tourism to airports, caterers, hoteliers and everything else,” Wilson said.

I think the power is in our hands,” said Air India CEO Campbell Wilson. “As time goes on, more and more of Indian aviation’s critical mass will be in India,” he added, while acknowledging that aircraft supply constraints will be determined by external partners.

Air India loyalty with the Maharaja Club

On the potential of the airline’s loyalty program, the Maharaja Club, Wilson confirmed that Air India Express will be integrated into the loyalty program “probably sometime this year.”

Wilson highlighted that the Maharaja Club already has 10 million members and it’s adding around 300,000 more every month, describing the upside as “huge.” He said that work was being done to make the program competitive and more customer friendly. “ Air India frequent flyer will be the second currency of India,” Wilson said.

Air India and AI

Wilson sharing his take on AI would said that it would be used for “augmentation,” not “substitution.” Issuing refunds and training pilots, cabin crew and ground staff would be areas where gen AI would be a fit, Wilson said. “The number of procedures a ground staff needs to remember, a cabin crew needs to remember, a pilot needs to remember, gen AI can aggregate, synthesize and present a very concise answer based on your tens of thousands of pages of SOP and policy,” Wilson concluded.

Flyadeal appoints Rogier Van Enk as chief commercial and customer officer

The post Flyadeal appoints Rogier Van Enk as chief commercial and customer officer appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

flyadeal has announced the appointment of European airline executive Rogier van Enk as Chief Commercial and Customer Officer. Dutch national Van Enk, who joins Saudi Arabia’s youngest low-cost carrier (LCC) at a time of unprecedented growth, brings with him a wealth of industry experience working in Europe – with British Airways and latterly, Finnair, the national carrier of Finland.

Just seven years old, flyadeal has been catapulted into the region’s fastest growing LCC currently operating a modern fleet of 37 aircraft to 30 seasonal and year-round destinations in Saudi Arabia, Middle East, Europe, North Africa and South Asia.

Van Enk said: “It’s a wonderful opportunity to join flyadeal that has ambitious, yet realistic growth targets fully aligned with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 of building a dynamic aviation and tourism industry. With one new route being launched, on average, every two weeks this year and a domestic and international network that will triple to over 100 destinations by 2030, what an opportune time to be part of an exciting young airline that’s maturing very fast.

“I’ve already seen flyadeal’s energy and enthusiasm with a team which is commercially and operationally focused on reaching its goal driven with passion. As Saudi Arabia takes centre stage in Middle East aviation, I very much look forward to working alongside new colleagues and contributing to the continued growth of flyadeal bringing rewarding experience gained at both Finnair and British Airways to my new role.”

During his two spells in a 12-year career at Finnair based in Helsinki, Van Enk held a number of commercial roles covering revenue management, distribution, online sales, business analytics and ancillary product development. He joins flyadeal after four years as Finnair’s Senior Vice President Customer Engagement responsible for, among others, brand, marketing, and loyalty business. He was also formerly Head of Distribution and Payments at British Airways in London.

He added: “On a personal level, I’m excited about the move to Saudi Arabia with my young family, looking forward to enjoying the country’s rich cultural heritage, the nation’s diversity and, as a foodie, the wonderful cuisine. More importantly, meet, engage and interact with amazing people in the Kingdom.”

Steven Greenway, flyadeal Chief Executive Officer, said: “On behalf of the team here at flyadeal, a great pleasure to welcome Rogier onboard. His experience working across many commercial and customer functions within full-service airlines in Europe made him the ideal appointment to take flyadeal’s commercial helm and bring his expertise into a low-cost environment.

“Rogier’s deep insights and knowledge gained in the digital space at Finnair and British Airways will contribute towards flyadeal’s continued mandate to remain digitally driven keeping both costs low and fares extremely competitive. My thanks to Trevor Spinks in his advisory role steering the commercial ship at flyadeal over the past 12 months during which flyadeal secured significant achievements including profitability for the first time in its seven-year history. Having made great progress, we look to keep up the momentum with Rogier taking over at a time of unprecedented expansion.”

Van Enk joins as flyadeal prepares for its busy summer seasonal flying programme with the launch of flights to the coastal city of Trabzon in Turkey; Baku and Tbilisi, capitals of Azerbaijan and Georgia respectively; the Egyptian resort town of Sharm El Sheikh; Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzogovina; and, for the first time, Salalah in southern Oman.

Over the next few months, aside from scheduled operations which represent the backbone of flyadeal’s business, the airline will expand its year-round Umrah services to destinations beyond the Middle East and central Asia. flyadeal is also planning for the upcoming Hajj season by flying 75,000 pilgrims – more than double last year – into the Kingdom from Europe, Middle East, South Asia and Asia.
