IATA calls for rapid global adoption of digital identity technologies

The post IATA calls for rapid global adoption of digital identity technologies appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) called for the rapid adoption of digital identity technologies today, 19th March, in Sydney, Australia.

These technologies are necessary for enhancing aviation security and operational efficiency worldwide.

IATA made the call to aviation industry leaders during the Sydney Leaders’ Week Conference hosted by Qantas.

Participants supported this position, emphasising the need for collaboration in implementing Verifiable Credentials (VC) and Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs).

Key benefits of identity tech to the global aviation sector

It is widely accepted that digital identity can bring the following benefits to aviation security:

  • Stronger Document Integrity: Reducing fraud and unauthorized access.
  • Global Trust: Enabling secure, cross-border, interoperable identity verification.
  • Operational Efficiency: Streamlining document verification for a smoother passenger experience, strengthening regulatory oversight, and optimizing resource allocation.

According to IATA senior vice-president for operations, safety, and security Nick Careen: “Global cooperation keeps flying secure. Adopting Verifiable Credentials and Decentralized Identifiers standards is a natural next step in reinforcing security, trust, and efficiency. Every aviation stakeholder wants flying to be even more secure—which crosses geopolitical divides. The technology is ready and proven. We now need to take the momentum of this meeting and work towards obtaining a recommendation at the upcoming ICAO assembly later this year.”

Digital transformation is key to boosting security

Aviation security leaders at the conference likewise identified key actions for governments to drive the industry’s digital transformation.

These include:

  • Fast-Track Technology Integration: Incorporate VC and DID technologies into national and international security frameworks, aligning with ICAO Annex 17 and Aircraft Operator Security Programs (AOSP).
  • Prioritize Aviation Digital ID Use Cases: Integrate aviation digital identity solutions into national digital strategies to enhance global cooperation.
  • Invest in Capacity Building: Allocate resources to equip industry stakeholders with the necessary knowledge and infrastructure for seamless implementation.
  • Increase Stakeholder Engagement: Promote awareness and industry-wide adoption of digital identity solutions through targeted education and outreach.

In order to make this possible, IATA’s One ID initiative promotes globally interoperable digital identity standards, enabling passengers to verify their travel documents before departure and move through the airport using biometric recognition instead of physical documents.

One ID works in harmony with ICAO’s Digital Travel Credential ensuring security and efficiency while maintaining privacy and compliance with global regulations.

IATA is also advancing its Aviation Security Trust Framework, which sees regulatory alignment, cross-sector collaboration and infrastructure as critical components to realize the benefits of digital identity in global aviation.

Rosewood Hotel Group receives coveted GSTC certification

The post Rosewood Hotel Group receives coveted GSTC certification appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Rosewood Hotel Group recently received the prestigious Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) certification, including its key properties in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

The certification, granted by Bureau Veritas, an accredited GSTC certification body, applies to 47 properties across Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, New World Hotels & Resorts, and Carlyle & Co.

GSTC chief executive Randy Durband said: “We extend our congratulations to Rosewood Hotel Group on achieving GSTC certification at a group-wide level, and particularly, twelve certified properties of their portfolio are among the first in their respective countries to receive GSTC-Accredited Certification, the highest level of assurance of credible validation of hotel sustainability claims.”

Durband also expressed hope that Rosewood Hotel Group’s achievement will serve as an inspiration for others to embrace and prioritise sustainability with rigorous and credible external verification.

Team effort

The GSTC certification is a result of efforts steered by Rosewood Impacts, the group’s roadmap for delivering positive impact on all its communities and our shared planet, which reflects the Group’s ambition to become a purpose-led organization.

This year, Rosewood Impacts will continue to empower Rosewood’s community and ecosystems towards a more sustainable future by launching a group-wide carbon-neutrality journey, welcoming five additional properties as Impact Trailblazers, and rolling out more business-with-purpose restaurants at select properties.

With GSTC certification, Rosewood Hotel Group solidifies its role as a leader in sustainable hospitality, ensuring its properties, including Rosewood Abu Dhabi and Rosewood Jeddah, meet the highest environmental and social standards.

Meeting stringent standards

The certification verified that the Group’s operational standards and guest experiences align with four key GSTC Criteria: effective sustainable management, social and economic benefits for local communities, preservation of cultural heritage, and environmental responsibility.

A key differentiator of the Group’s ethos is its commitment that sustainability and social impact initiatives are not mandates but core pillars, in which each property embraces every detail: from eco-conscious culinary creations and educational guest programming to sustainable design elements alongside those that celebrate local heritage and artistry, to partnerships that uplift local livelihoods.

Rosewood’s vice-president of impact and sustainability Mehvesh Mumtaz Ahmed was moved to remark: “We endeavour to create experiences that are exciting and meaningful, and elevated yet responsible. The GSTC certification is a welcome endorsement that we are affixing this enrichment lens on every part of our business, from hiring, supply chain, and partnerships to procurement, design and more.”

KAI Hakone reopens this August

The post KAI Hakone reopens this August appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Hoshino Resorts announced that its onsen ryokan [hot spring inn] KAI Hakone reopens on 1st August this year, following closure due to extensive refurbishment.

Located in the 1,200-year-old onsen town Hakone Yumoto, KAI Hakone has welcomed numerous travellers since 2012 with guest rooms offering picturesque views of Mount Yusaka and the Sukumo River.

With its rich history, Hakone Yumoto flourished as a hot spring resort along the Tokaido Road, one of the five main routes during the Edo period, by soothing the fatigue of travellers.

The property is adorned with Yosegi-zaiku, a traditional type of mosaic woodwork that developed in Hakone during the Edo period.

The concept of “A Hakone-style Inn Immersed in the History of the Tokaido Road” was chosen for KAI Hakone’s development, recognising Hakone’s history, as well as its hot springs, teahouses, and Yosegi-zaiku.

The Hakone route, known for its steep and challenging terrain, was lined with teahouses where weary travellers could rest.

Located between Odawara and Hakone, Hatajuku is known as the birthplace of Yosegi-Zaiku mosaic woodwork where items made using a variety of woods from Hakone’s mountains became popular souvenirs for travellers.

Extensive and exquisite renovations

The renovation will introduce a relaxing space centred around a newly constructed teahouse in the courtyard.

Located amidst lush greenery, this space will offer a soothing atmosphere alongside the hot springs, where guests can unwind after arrival and spend time with family and friends after dinner.

New guest rooms will incorporate the culture nurtured by travellers on the Tokaido Road, while new KAI Cultural Discovery activities and a dedicated space for these activities will also be introduced, allowing guests to experience the history and traditions of Hakone throughout their stay.

Where culture and hospitality meet

As part of the KAI brand’s hospitality, which focuses on embracing local traditional culture, the “Yosegi CHAYA” event will be held every evening, where staff will share the story of Yosegi-zaiku’s origins and the secrets of its crafting process.

Guests can also visit the workshop of a Yosegi-zaiku artisan through the local cultural experience program.

Visitors have praised opportunities such as these to engage with Japan’s traditional crafts and culture during their stay.

Therefore, the renovation will allow guests to experience more of Hakone’s charm than ever before.
