Rainforest Wild Asia is open to the public! Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations, Grace Fu officiated the launch of Singapore’s fifth wildlife park, welcoming the first park-goers before embarking on a rainforest adventure.

Mike Barclay, Group CEO, Mandai Wildlife Group, said: “Rainforest Wild Asia captures the essence of a rainforest adventure, inviting you to fully engage with nature and discover wildlife in unexpected corners. The multi-layered experience encourages park-goers to explore a Southeast Asian rainforest up in the tree canopy, on the forest floor and below the ground in a network of cave chambers. Visitors can choose between universally designed walkways, more challenging forest treks, or an array of guided adventures.

“The opening of Rainforest Wild Asia marks an exciting milestone in the wider transformation of the Mandai Wildlife Reserve to become a world-leading nature and wildlife destination. We look forward to welcoming about 900,000 guests during the first year of operations.”

Minister Fu congratulated Mandai Wildlife Group on the inaugural birth of a Philippine spotted deer, a new-to-Singapore species featured in Rainforest Wild Asia, and one of the world’s rarest deer found in the wild on the Visayan Islands of the Philippines. The species is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and the birth highlights the important role human care can play in the conservation and survival of threatened species. Parkgoers will get to see the doe and her fawn in the Canopy zone of the park.

A range of add-on Adventure+ and Black Adventure activities operated by Forest Adventure are designed to elevate the thrill of discovering the rainforest park. Adventure+ offers two distinct activities including Canopy Jump where guests step off a 13- or 20-metre platform for a simulated free fall and AIA Vitality Bounce, an open-sky bouncing play area which features various bounce zones at least three metres above ground.

For the bolder in spirit, Black Adventure offers two guided, three-hour harnessed tours that take participants to areas that are otherwise inaccessible. On the Wild Apex Adventure, guests will climb across the Karst and Canopy habitats, safely moving along the via ferrata path on metal rungs, ladders, and suspended bridges. With some luck, they may spot the rare François’ langurs scaling the vertical rock formations. The Wild Cavern Adventure takes participants on a simulated cave expedition, from abseiling in the dark to squeezing through tight spaces, navigating boulder fields, and exploring narrow tunnels.

Rainforest Wild Asia opens daily from 9am to 6pm, with the last admission at 5pm. Visitors can make their way in via Mandai Wildlife West, which is a public space offering a range of dining options and playgrounds. Single-park admission is at the full price of $43 for adults, $31 for children (aged 3 to 12 years old) and $20 for local senior citizens. Local residents can enjoy a special admission rate of $33 for adults, $21 for children (aged 3 to 12 years old) to Rainforest Wild Asia from now to 31 March 2025. Sign up for WildPass, a free digital membership, to enjoy benefits from discounts on online admission ticket purchases, retail and F&B outlets or purchase a Friends of Rainforest Wild Asia or Friends of Mandai membership for unlimited annual visits to Rainforest Wild Asia or all of Singapore’s wildlife parks. While the embassy has been in operation since 10th May last year at the RCBC Plaza in Makati City, consular services have been limited as it remained under construction.

Construction on the site was completed in time for the official visit of Slovenian Deputy Prime Minister and foreign minister Tanja Fajon which ran from 10th to 12th March.

Cathay Group reports on solid performance in 2024

The post Cathay Group reports on solid performance in 2024 appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

The Cathay Group announced its annual results for the year 2024 on Wednesday, 12th March.

The 2024 report highlights a solid financial performance driven by stronger cargo demand, higher passenger volumes, lower fuel price and higher cost efficiencies compared with the previous year.

The Hong Kong-based aviation firm reported an attributable profit of HK$9.9 billion in 2024, which compares with a profit of HK$9.8 billion in 2023.

Likewise, its airlines and subsidiaries, excluding exceptional items, reported an attributable profit of HK$8.8 billion for the full year of 2024, versus a profit of HK$9.2 billion in 2023.

Results from associates, the majority of which are recognised three months in arrears, were a full-year profit of HK$288 million, compared with a loss of HK$1.6 billion in 2023.

Cathay Group chair Patrick Healy pointed out that this is the Group’s second consecutive year of solid financial performance and is the result of the outstanding effort and dedication of our global teams.

Healy said: “It has enabled us to complete buybacks, pay dividends to our shareholders, reward our people and commit substantial investments that will enhance the experience for our customers and benefit our home hub, Hong Kong.”

Group performance in 2024

Cathay Cargo performed very well in 2024, especially in the second half of the year with strong e-commerce demand being a key driver.

Overall, cargo tonnage was 11 percent higher and yield was about three percent higher than in 2023.

In terms of travel, both Cathay Pacific and HK Express carried over 30 percent more passengers year on year.

However, as more flights were added to the market, passenger yields continued to normalise as expected.

Cathay Pacific saw a 12 percent decrease in yield, while for HK Express this was even more pronounced with yields down 23 percent year on year, reflecting the intense competition on regional routes.

That said, Cathay remains committed to its dual-brand strategy to best serve customers with different needs, with Cathay Pacific as its premium full-service airline and HK Express as its low-cost airline.

HK Express experienced short-term operational issues in 2024 that affected its earnings, with an average of five of its Airbus A320neo fleet grounded due to industry-wide Pratt & Whitney engine issues.

Cathay likewise expressed its confidence in HK Express’ low-cost carrier business model for the long term, with its commitment to offering low fares and more destination choices for customers.

A path to sustained profitability can be expected as the airline continues to grow and increase its efficiencies.

Indeed, HK Express is the world’s fastest-growing airline according to aviation analytics provider OAG, and was recently named one of the world’s top five low-cost airlines by Airline Ratings.

Although the Cathay Group’s airlines flew more, fuel was less expensive with the average into-plane unit price of fuel (excluding hedging) being over 9% lower year on year.

Furthermore, with the increase in both passenger and cargo volumes, the Cathay Group (before subsidiaries and associates) was able to spread its fixed costs over a wider base, resulting in a 4.5 percent decrease in cost per available tonne kilometre (ATK) (excluding fuel) compared with 2023.

Results from associates and key financial updates

The results from associates, recognised three months in arrears, also improved from a HK$1.6 billion loss in 2023 to a HK$288 million profit in 2024.

Air China’s results improved due to the recovery of the civil aviation market, increased fleet efficiency and stricter cost management.

In addition to Cathay buying back the remaining 50 percent, or HK$9.8 billion, of the preference shares from the Hong Kong SAR Government in July 2024, a total of nearly HK$4 billion was paid to the Government in preference share dividends over its holding period and in buying back the warrants in September 2024.

In early January of this year, Cathay also repurchased approximately 68% of the HK$6.7 billion guaranteed convertible bonds due 2026.

Cathay’s full-year result enabled it to announce a second interim dividend payment to ordinary shareholders of 49 cents per share.

Together with the first interim dividend that had already been paid, a total of 69 cents per share or HK$4.4 billion will have been paid in ordinary share dividends in respect of 2024.

Also, Cathay is pleased to provide its people with more than 10 weeks of eligible pay in total in the form of discretionary bonus and profit sharing.

Investments and fleet expansion

Healy added: “We are excited about the future and remain firmly committed to strengthening the Hong Kong international aviation hub by boosting air travel and cargo capacity, and elevating our customer experience. Our financial performance gives us the confidence to commit to investing over HK$100 billion to coincide with the launch of the Three-Runway System.”

The Cathay Group has begun to take delivery of over100 new-generation aircraft, and continues to present new world-leading cabin interiors including Aria Suite and the all-new Premium Economy, new flagship lounges, and digital innovations.

The aviation firm is also expanding its global network, having already announced 11 additional destinations for 2025 with more to come.

Together, Cathay Pacific and HK Express will operate passenger services to more than 100 destinations around the world within this year.

Healy concluded with: “As Hong Kong’s home airline group, we look forward to continuing to do our part to elevate Hong Kong’s status as a world-leading international aviation hub connecting Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, and the world. I would like to sincerely thank our people, our customers, our shareholders and the Hong Kong SAR Government for the invaluable support they have shown Cathay.”

Tourism is uplifting livelihoods in the Northern Philippines

The post Tourism is uplifting livelihoods in the Northern Philippines appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

The Department of Tourism in Cordillera Administrative Region (DOT-CAR) in the Northern Philippines reports that the growing number of tourists in the region is uplifting the lives of their people.

At a media event held in Baguio City today, 12th March, DOT-CAR director Jovita Ganongan remarked that greater tourist numbers have translated into economic gains.

CAR received a total of 1,983,511 tourists in different destinations across its six provinces and two cities in 2024.

The number is significantly higher than the 1.68 million reported in 2023 and 1.28 million in 2022.

Significant earnings

Ganongan said that based on the average daily expenditure of a foreign and a domestic tourist of PHP7,000 and PHP4,000 respectively, the region received PHP10.72 billion in receipts from tourism.

She said: “This is just a one-day computation but a tourist spends an average of two to three days in a destination. The economic contribution of tourism is seen from the jobs generated and the opportunities created from tourism.”

Ganongan explained that expenditures for tourists in any place translates to opportunities for the residents.

She said: “Tourists require a bed to sleep on and a place to eat food. They also look for souvenirs to buy for their friends and loved ones. All these opportunities translate to livelihood activities which in turn creates local jobs.”

Ganongan added that Ifugao, Kalinga, and the Mountain Province are top destinations for Europeans, while American tourists prefer Baguio City.

French visitors topped the region’s foreign arrivals in 2024 with 8,829; Americans at 5,325; and Germans, 4,706.

Ganongan added that with the robust tourism in different regions, the government also invests in terms of infrastructure.

She said a total of 376.33 kilometers of tourism road infrastructure projects were built at the cost of PHP11.47 trillion from 2012 to 2024.

Ganongan concluded with: “The government through the DOT is not just investing in infrastructure but also in the capacity building and human resource development to further boost the Filipino brand of service for domestic and for foreign tourists.”
