Vietnamese province of Quang Ninh set to boost cruise tourism sector

The post Vietnamese province of Quang Ninh set to boost cruise tourism sector appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Northern Vietnam’s Quang Ninh province is poised to boost its cruise tourism sector after its excellent performance in 2024.

The province which is home to UNESCO-recognised natural heritage Ha Long Bay welcomed 19 million tourists, including 3.8 million foreigners, in the past year, with cruise travelers making a significant contribution.

Making the most of its proximity to China, Japan, and South Korea, Quang Ninh has been tirelessly promoting its integrated infrastructure, breathtaking landscapes, and rich cultural heritage to attract cruise liners.

Last year, approximately 60 international cruise ships brought over 100,000 visitors to Ha Long, with renowned brands like Viking Orion and Royal Caribbean making stops.

The province hopes to welcome 20 million tourists in 2025, including 4.5 million international visitors.

Game-changing initiatives

Among the initiatives implemented by Quang Ninh authorities are enhanced cruise itineraries, such as routes from China’s Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Beihai to Ha Long.

For instance, the Blue Dream Melody cruise ship brought 400 Chinese tourists to Ha Long in late 2024, signaling a growing demand.

Moving forward, the province’s tourism sector will continue to upgrade infrastructure, develop high-end tourism products, and ensure top-quality services.

Emphasis will also be placed on training staff, improving safety standards, and collaborating with travel agencies to create customized experiences for cruise passengers.

Ha Long City also plans to integrate cultural themes, such as the City of Flowers and City of Festivals, to further enhance its appeal.

Additionally, the province intends to form partnerships with reputable tour operators and host media and travel agencies to showcase its offerings.

With these robust strategies, Quang Ninh is positioning itself as a leading cruise destination in Vietnam and the region.

Italy makes fingerprint collection mandatory

The post Italy makes fingerprint collection mandatory appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Starting on 11 January 2025, candidates for long-term Schengen visas to Italy, including visas issued for employment and study purposes, among others, are required to visit the nearest embassy in their home country, where they will have their biometrics collected, including their fingerprints.

The measure already applies to short-term visa applicants. In addition, international students to Italy will also be subject to the fingerprint rule, which requires them to book and attend an individual appointment at the Italian consulate, where they will have their fingerprints collected. As informed by a news report in Schengen News.

Following the entry into force of Decree-Law 145/2024, as of 11 January, 2025, it will be mandatory to collect the fingerprints of applicants for both Schengen visas (type C) and national entry visas (type D). Applicants will, therefore, be required to appear in person when submitting their visa application.

The new changes come as a result of the Italian government’s enhanced efforts to raise security after reports of criminal inflirtation happening in recent years. In conclusion, all applicants for long-term visas, including those issued for employment, self-employment, study, family reunification, retirement and investment purposes, have to comply with this rule.

The new measure offers another layer of protection for the Italian authorities but adds to the burden of applicants who have to deal with another administrative procedure and more travel expenses.

Besides having to book an appointment for the biometric data collection, which takes a few minutes, the travel expenses will be higher as applicants have to travel to the nearest Italian consular office.

However, a disadvantage that could threaten the new measure is that it could lengthen overall visa application times. Reports of lengthy visa appointment waiting times at Italian consulates are already lengthy, especially in countries with high numbers of applications.

A first set of measures aimed at enhancing security was approved in early October, with further law changes expected in 2025.

Melting Glaciers are shifting National Borders

The post Melting Glaciers are shifting National Borders appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

In Europe and around the globe, melting glaciers are transforming both landscapes and national borders. In this article, Elzė Buslavičiūtė and Dr Laurynas Jukna, researchers at the Institute of Geosciences of Vilnius University, discuss space-based observations of this phenomenon.

Europe’s glaciers and their importance

When we think of glaciers, vast ice sheets in polar regions often come to mind, such as those in Antarctica or Greenland. However, there are many more glaciers in the world, and they are far more diverse. Globally, there are currently more than 200,000 glaciers that do not fall into the category of ice sheets (continental glaciers greater than 50,000 km²).

These include glacial valleys, hanging glaciers, mountain glaciers, ice caps, etc., which are under 50,000 km² and often concentrated in mountainous regions. Such glaciers are also common in Europe, particularly in Iceland, the Scandinavian Peninsula, Svalbard, the Pyrenees, and the European Alps.

Glaciers are massive ice bodies that move under the force of gravity. They form where the accumulation of snow exceeds its ablation. Over time, snow compacts into firn – partially compacted granular snow – and, eventually, transforms into solid glacier ice.

Roughly 20,000–22,000 years ago, glaciers (or, to be more precise, an ice sheet that shifted from Scandinavia) shaped present-day European terrain, leaving distinct marks on the landscape that still remain visible today. In modern times, glaciers continue to play a critical role: they store freshwater, sustain Europe’s rivers and lakes, and regulate both water runoff and air temperatures.

Monitoring Alpine glacier melt from space

While glaciers in the Alps have been retreating since the end of the Ice Age, the pace of their melting has accelerated in recent decades due to human-induced global warming. According to the long-term observations by Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland (GLAMOS), the area of glaciers in the Swiss Alps decreased from 1,311 km² in 1973 to 961 km² in 2016.

This represents a loss of almost 350 km² of glacial area in under half a century. Such large-scale monitoring is based on archival aerial and satellite imagery.

Glacier melting from 1850 to 2016 in southwestern Switzerland based on GLAMOS aerial and satellite observations. On the right is a false-colour Landsat 8 satellite image from 2 October 2016, with lines indicating the distribution of glaciers during different periods.

NASA’s Landsat mission, which has been monitoring the Earth since 1972, has provided invaluable data on glacier loss. False-colour Landsat satellite images showcase the heavily visited Rhône Glacier and the source of the Rhône River in Switzerland. The image, comprising near infrared, red, and green bands, highlights glaciers in bluish-white tones, while the surrounding vegetation appears red. A comparison of the images taken in August 2001 and August 2024 reveals a striking reduction in the area covered by the glacier.
