Dusit Thani College hosts Travel and Tourism Research Association’s 2024 seminar

The post Dusit Thani College hosts Travel and Tourism Research Association’s 2024 seminar appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

The Travel and Tourism Research Association (TTRA) held its annual seminar at the Srinakarin Hall of Thailand’s Dusit Thani College from 30th November to 3rd December.

This year’s seminar focused on the theme Tourism and Travel: Sustainable Transformations in the Asia Pacific.

Dusit Thani College rector Atthawet Prougestaporn formally opened the event, pointing out how the tourism sector has been Thailand’s main source of income since 1987.

Prougestaporn explained: “During that time, there were about 2.4 million tourists visiting Thailand per year. However, according to data from 202, there were about 2.4 million tourists visiting Thailand per month and there will be around 35 million tourists in total for the year 2024. These data reflect how much the tourism industry is growing. However, growth comes with deprivation, especially in terms of the environment, way of living of local communities, and culture. We hope that this seminar can be a space where the theories in the research can be put into practice, as well as a platform for the exchange of ideas for our industry.”

TTRA Asia-Pacific chapter president Aaron Tham likewise emphasised that sustainability is a topic that every industry around the world places an importance on, and the TTRA is ready to extend its assistance in order to achieve this goal.

ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index launched at Extraordinary Travel Festival 2024

The post ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index launched at Extraordinary Travel Festival 2024 appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Aside from breaking records, this year’s Extraordinary Travel Festival in Bangkok, Thailand also saw the launch of the ETF/AB Magellan Travel Index (MTI.)

The MTI is a revolutionary initiative which aims to redefine how travel achievements are measured and celebrated.

ETF founder Ric Gazarian said of the MTI: “It not only celebrates the legacies of historical explorers but also shines a spotlight on the extraordinary achievements of today’s global travelers. This index is a tool to inspire and challenge adventurers around the world.”

The launch of the MTI cast the spotlight on the world’s top travelers, announcing the five most accomplished explorers based on the inaugural ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index rankings.

These trailblazers are Michael Runkel (Germany), João Paulo Peixoto (Portugal), Thomas Buechler (Switzerland), Harry Mitsidis (UK/Greece), and Pawel Krzyk (Poland).

What does the ETF/ABS Magellan Travel Index do?

Named in honour of the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, The MTI is designed to track and quantify the accomplishments of modern-day travelers.

Magellan’s legacy as the first leader of a circumnavigation of the globe resonates deeply with the ethos of today’s explorers, who continue to push the boundaries of discovery and adventure.

The MTI centres on three key objectives:

  • Celebrate Achievement: The MTI recognizes extraordinary travel accomplishments, fostering a sense of community and inspiration among global explorers.
  • Promote Exploration: By honoring figures like Magellan and modern adventurers, the index bridges the past and present, encouraging a spirit of curiosity and bravery.
  • Set a Global Benchmark: Created by ABS in partnership with ETF, the MTI aims to establish a universal standard for evaluating travel achievements.

The MTI is based on two main factors, each given equal weight: Quality of Travel, which is determined by how many regions one has travelled based on their membership among Most Travelled People, NomadMania, and the Travel Century Club; and Quantity of Travel which is evaluated with the use of four key points:

  • UNESCO Sites: number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites (WHS) visited.
  • Tentative List: number of sites on UNESCO’s Tentative List visited.
  • Capitals: number of capitals of countries and territories visited.
  • Borders: number of land or sea borders crossed.

The launch of the MTI at the ETF is a tribute to the evolving nature of travel. From reaching remote corners of the globe to engaging with diverse cultures, today’s explorers carry forward the torch of historical figures like Magellan.

United to invest more than half a billion-dollars on Washington Dulles Hub

The post United to invest more than half a billion-dollars on Washington Dulles Hub appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

New era of growth includes new 435,000-sq.ft. concourse, new United ClubSM, state-of-the-art customer amenities, and a new flight attendant training center.

United and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) recently celebrated the airline’s growth and airport construction developments of the much-anticipated, more than half a billion-dollar Concourse E that will transform the customer experience over the coming years at Washington Dulles International Airport. The 435,000-square-foot, 14-gate concourse will include an expansive new United ClubSM location and state-of-the-art customer amenities that are expected to debut in late 2026.

The new Concourse E is made possible in part due to collaboration between United and MWAA, and local and federal funding such as grants from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for airport improvement projects that will help facilitate Dulles’ expansion.

United is the D.C. region’s largest airline, with more than 8,000 local employees and more flights and destinations than any other carrier. As part of United’s ongoing growth and commitment to the region, United will open a new flight attendant training center in 2025, and the airline is expanding its network even further with exciting new destinations and is currently operating 25 percent more flights as compared to 2023.

“Washington Dulles has emerged as a global gateway and these new investments will help deliver the world-class facility that our employees and customers deserve,” said United CEO Scott Kirby. “Today is one of many milestone celebrations to come in United’s long-term commitment in advancing our Dulles hub.”

United has invested more than $32 billion across its business since 2021. This Dulles expansion and modernization follows similar investments at airport facilities in Denver, Houston, and Newark, and is part of the airline’s United Next plan to invest in infrastructure, people, and technology.

“Dulles serves as a critical economic development hub for Virginia and helps travelers get where they need to go. I’ve been proud to help secure federal funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to expand the concourses, which will make traveling to and from the airport more convenient,” said Senator Tim Kaine. “I’m thrilled to celebrate the construction of this new concourse because it will enhance the experience of every traveler who walks through the airport. I thank United and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) for their partnership in this effort.”

“Every day, Dulles Airport serves tens of thousands of passengers coming in and out of the DMV region. I’m glad to see this major expansion build on the historic investments we’ve made through the bipartisan infrastructure law and support the construction of the newest concourse at Dulles,” said Senator Mark Warner. “I look forward to seeing Concourse E come to life with 14 additional gates that will increase flight options and state-of-the-art facilities that will improve the experience of air travelers.”

New Concourse to Modernize Dulles

Construction is underway on the new Concourse E, which will exclusively house 14 dedicated United gates that will bring additional space to accommodate United Next’s new widebody and mainline planes, which will continue to debut over the coming years.

The modernized concourse will greatly enhance the Dulles experience for United customers, including adding direct and easy access to the airport’s existing Aerotrain station that allows for smoother transport between the main terminal and other concourses. The United gates will feature the latest traveler amenities and technology, expansive gate seating, along with concessions and retail space.

The concourse will also be home to a new 40,000-square-foot United Club. This will be one of the largest United Club locations in the network and will subsequently increase the United Club square footage space at Dulles by 70%.

The 14-gate concourse is one phase of a long-term, multi-phase project for United’s growth at Dulles that is part of MWWA’s master plan for the airport’s future.

“Washington Dulles International is a key economic engine for the National Capital Region, and United Airlines is our essential partner in the rapid and ongoing growth of the airport,” said Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority President and CEO Jack Potter. “United’s commitment to Dulles – through its support of the new concourse, its long-term expansion plans, including new flights and destinations, investment in new training and technical facilities and the addition of thousands of local jobs – is a testament to the strength of our partnership in promoting regional economic growth and pursuing our mutual goal of providing world-class service to the traveling public.”

Expanded Flight Network connects D.C. to even more destinations

United is the D.C. region’s largest airline, offering more flights and destinations than any other carrier. As a result of its ambitious United Next growth plan, the airline continues to expand its flight network out of Dulles. To-date, United has grown to more than 250 daily departures with plans to grow to nearly 280 daily flights by April 2025.

This year, United launched 13 new domestic routes from Dulles – that is more new domestic routes than any other U.S. carrier has added from any U.S. airport this year. Among those new routes are the only nonstop service from the D.C. region to Anchorage, Alaska and Mobile, Alabama, as well as upcoming service to Palm Springs, California that begins December 19.

United serves as a crucial gateway between our nation’s capital and the rest of the world, this includes nonstop service to over a dozen world capitals from Accra and Brussels to Mexico City and Tokyo and places in between. This summer, United will add a new world capital destination with the addition of its inaugural nonstop service to Dakar, Senegal* beginning May 2025.

As United’s operations at Dulles continue to grow as a transatlantic gateway to the world, this summer United will be the first airline to offer the Washington region nonstop service to Nice, France and Venice, Italy.

Local Impact

As one of the largest employers in Loudoun County, United is an employer of choice for many across the Washington region. With its historic growth, in the last two years, the airline hired more than 30,000 people systemwide and plans to hire about 9,000 more in 2024, including more than 700 people in the Washington D.C. area.

United has called Washington Dulles International Airport home for nearly four decades and continues to grow and invest in the Washington region. United recently announced construction is underway to open a new 20,000-square-foot state-of-the-art Inflight Training Center near Dulles Airport in 2025. This facility is yet another example of United’s commitment to provide the latest and most modern training resources and support for its people.

While United connects the Greater Washington region to the world, its more than 8,000 D.C. area employees are pillars in the communities in which they work and live. Year-round United teams volunteer to pack meals for local nonprofits, mentor area students about the breadth of career opportunities in aviation, and help raise funds for various local organizations, including nearly $4 million to Washington area non-profits, partners, and organizations in 2023.

United also deepened its commitment in the region through D.C.’s sports culture, recently becoming the Official Global Airline Partner of the Washington Capitals, Mystics, and Wizards. United is also the Founding Partner of Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s upcoming transformation to help revitalize downtown D.C. as a world-class sports and entertainment destination.

United’s significant presence in the D.C. area allows the airline to serve as a critical partner to the federal government on national initiatives from its Dulles hub, including assisting the U.S. military in evacuating thousands of refugees from Afghanistan, as well as donating commercial flights to help deliver baby formula across the nation to American families during an unprecedented shortage.

A Cocktail of innovation & sustainability at Skyline Bar Venice

The post A Cocktail of innovation & sustainability at Skyline Bar Venice appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

The word ‘Artisan’ has never been more relevant than in Venice. A city with a history of high-craftsmanship, precious products and inimitable style. It is through these arts, crafts and traditions that ‘Le Serenissima’ comes alive, and still visible within workshops, boutiques, restaurants, cafés and bars, all curating an ‘experience’ and ‘taste’ of ‘La Dolce Vita’.

Exploring the city through the lens of its craftspeople, is to link with the past, present, and future. Adding to the roll-call of artisans is Valentina Mircea, an award-winning mixologist, bringing her new and seasonal cocktail menu to the lofty heights of the ‘Skyline Rooftop Bar’ at the Hilton Molino Stucky – Giudecca Island, as the hotel’s first ever female Bar Manageress.

As the highest bar in Venice, ‘Skyline’ boasts an inspiring vista stretching from Canale Giudecca to Piazza San Marco, as the sun sets over the domes, bell towers and ochre-coloured roof tops. It is a city institution, which may seem like inspiration enough to design cocktails, but Valentina is taking things ‘back-to-the future’.

Using repurposed ingredients to design unique cocktails, whilst respecting the old classics and even harnessing the digital world along the way, is helping her curate what she calls her ‘Voyage’ – a journey through the flavours which represent Venice.

The ‘Artisan Negroni’ is one cocktail which encapsulates Valentina’s ethos and features prominently on the bars winter menu; using equal measures of Sospiri Gin, Campari, Rabitt Premium Bitter and Bottega Vermouth and finished with a Campari-Caviar garnish, it not only champions local ingredients, but respects the ‘classic’ history of the drink, with her own visionary interpretation.

As I bite into the dehydrated fruit slice topped with caviar, it explodes in the mouth with a ‘Caspian pop’ before washing-it-down with a sip of the warming amber liquid, which provides a strong, bitter and spicy finish. This matches the early evening vibes, whilst looking-out upon a Venetian winter sun, setting on one of the world’s great cityscapes.

“Our Negroni is just a touch away from a classic, but with the introduction of locally sourced and beautiful products, it’s a combination and experience only found in Skyline” she comments.

The menu describes each cocktail in three words, which instantly matches the guest’s palate to their ideal drink. Another innovation is seeing your cocktail prepared virtually via a QR Code on the menu, part of this new-world theatrics, which mixes with the old. All very clever!

Both summer and winter menus closely match. One of the summer’s top-selling cocktails ‘Stucky Bloom’, is a twist on the iconic Gimlet evoking the botanical wonders of the city using the hotel’s own Stucky 1985 Venice Gardens Gin. It has now morphed into the ‘Stucky Storm’ which embraces a little bit more ginger giving it a much deeper interpretation of the same cocktail.

Subtle changes with the innovative introduction of ingredients, is the ‘magic’ which Valentina often refers to. The ‘Crystal Martina’ is now a ‘Glacial Martini’ reflecting the luxury and elegance of the lagoon. There is a story to be told behind each creation; ‘207 Sky’ is a smooth, aromatic blend of Amaro Locale, Italicus and Skyline’s homemade Agrumi Liqueur. In fact Amaro Locale 207, won ‘World’s Best Bitters’ at the World Liqueur Awards 2024 and held their launch event in Skyline.

Central to Valentina’s ideology is ‘Sustainability’, sourcing local products and engaging the local community alongside her guests. Examples of repurposing surplus ingredients include using coffee grinds from the hotel’s ‘Rialto Restaurant’. This forms the central ingredient to an in-house Coffee Liqueur, used to create their individual take on the ever-popular ‘Expresso Martini’.

“For every bottle of Prosecco and Champagne that goes flat, we add a touch of pisco, vodka, sugar, mint and magic and we create our own House Vermouth” Valentina adds. The new tangy tropical fruit cocktail Umami, features refreshing mango foam and mango juice from the whole fruit to ensure nothing is wasted.

Her passion for her work, extends to her team and beyond. Valentina feels she is playing her part for female empowerment within a role she still feels is skewed towards men. Hence, she is setting up an all-female bartender’s club from March 2025 by corralling a growing number of female bartenders in Venice.

Similarly, she has set-up monthly masterclasses for her bar team, which will deepen everyone’s knowledge of various brands. Valentina has only been in Venice since February 2024 and has already created two seasonal menus which reflect the essence of Venice, whilst engaging local producers and communities and developed sustainable and inclusive initiatives. She is not only inspiring her team, but looking to inspire female bartenders across Venice.

So, like her cocktails, it is easy to describe Valentina in three words – Artisanal, Empowering and Trendsetting – now that is a cocktail which should suit every palate!
