According to a recent target group analysis*, cultural and culinary experiences are two of the most compelling reasons to visit Sweden, alongside the allure of vibrant city life. This trend is reflected in this year’s exciting developments, which range from world-class restaurants to immersive cultural attractions. Additionally, there is a growing preference for multi-star hotels, although budget-friendly options remain essential to accommodate a variety of travellers. For a deeper connection to nature, culture and yourself, here’s a look at what’s in store.

New hotel & restaurant openings:

West Sweden

  • EXO in Karlatornet: Scandinavia’s highest restaurant will open in spring 2025 in Gothenburg, located on the 69th floor of Karlatornet. EXO will offer dining and an observation deck 220 meters above sea level. Read more: goteborg.com.
  • Hjortviken: Sweden’s first country club, opening in January 2025 in West Sweden. This lakeside resort near Gothenburg features 150 rooms, two pools, and Spanish-Swedish cuisine, emphasising outdoor activities and an “offline” experience.
Hyatt Place Gothenburg Central: This 300-room hotel, which will open Spring 2025 at Gothenburg’s central station, includes suites, a restaurant, and a lobby bar.

Central Sweden

  • Hernö Gin Hotel: Opening in February 2025 in Härnösand, this hotel is dedicated to premium gin, offering 120 rooms, bars, and a restaurant.
  • Stockholm Stadshotell: Stockholm Landmark to Reopen – A New Era in Luxury Hospitality. Sweden’s first Relais & Châteaux hotel, opening 25 January 2025 in Stockholm. It combines historic architecture with modern luxury and includes a fine-dining restaurant and wellness area.

South Sweden

  • Pensionat Furuhem: Michelin chef Magnus Nilsson’s new restaurant and Bed & Breakfast opening in spring 2025 in Båstad, blending fine dining with cosy accommodation.
  • Vallens Säteri: Reopening in May 2025 after a fire, this historic hotel near Båstad will feature 33 rooms and conference spaces.

New cultural attractions:

  • “Ecstasy! The Swedish Diva” at Millesgården: In February 2025, actor and drag artist Robert Fux curates a dazzling exhibition in Stockholm celebrating the power of Swedish divas through original costumes, rare artefacts, and immersive installations. The exhibition showcases stage costumes from around sixty Swedish divas, spanning from the past to the present, including Greta Garbo, Leila K, and Birgit Nilsson to Camilla Henemark, Anita Ekberg, Git Gay, and Unna Daj-Elecktra. Visitors can marvel at sacred diva relics such as Jenny Lind’s bracelets, Zarah Leander’s collected hair, makeup from John Lind, Sweden’s first drag show star, and the death mask of opera legend Christina Nilsson.
  • Hilma af Klint Centre: Opening in the summer of 2025 on the island of Adelsö, near Stockholm, the centre will focus on the legacy of Swedish artist Hilma af Klint and will offer an artist residency programme. It will be the first global centre dedicated to her work.
  • Landskrona Kallbadhus: Landskrona in southern Sweden´s Skåne region, once boasted two cold bathing houses, both sadly lost to storms over the years, with the most recent destruction occurring in 2013. Since then, the town has been eagerly awaiting the arrival of a new pier and a brand-new cold bathhouse—opening early 2025, the wait is finally over!

The new pier leads to a stunning cold bathhouse designed by local architects, magazinA. Here, you’ll find separate male and female sauna areas, each with its own set of bathing stairs, as well as a shared, connecting relaxation space. Inside the sauna, visitors will enjoy breathtaking views of the Öresund Strait, and even catch a glimpse of Copenhagen through the large glass walls.

This is more than just a bathhouse—it’s a rejuvenating escape with a view, a quintessential Swedish spa experience. Cold bath houses, inspired by 19th-century continental health resorts, began emerging in Sweden in the late 1800s, following the earlier use of stair-equipped outdoor pools from the 1850s. An experience where adventure meets wellness; a transformative ‘coolcation’ activity that remains popular across Sweden today.

Events and anniversaries:

  • Hanseatic Days in Visby: From 5-8 June 2025, Visby will host the Hanseatic Days, celebrating the historic Hanseatic League. The event brings together cities across Europe for a mix of culture, markets, seminars, and networking. Read more: hanse.org
  • Kattegattleden’s 10-Year Anniversary: On June 6th 2025, Sweden’s stunning coastal cycling trail celebrates its 10th anniversary. Recognised as European ‘Cycle Route of the Year´ in 2018, this 390-kilometre trail stretches from Gothenburg to Helsingborg. As the anniversary coincides with Sweden´s National Day, there are sure to be some festivities along the trail to mark this milestone.
  • Dog Agility World Championship in Kalmar: From September 17-21, 2025, Kalmar hosts the prestigious event, with 700 competitors from 55 countries.

Barclays: Cinemas enjoy 22.8 per cent boost in November

The post Barclays: Cinemas enjoy 22.8 per cent boost in November appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Consumer card spending contracted -0.5 per cent year-on-year in November – the first decline since July and significantly lower than the latest CPIH inflation rate of 3.2 per cent. Essential spending saw its steepest fall in over five years, down -3.1 per cent. However, non-essential spending remained in growth, at 0.8 per cent, supported by a strong performance from bars, pubs, and clubs (3.5 per cent) and entertainment (10.8 per cent) as Brits prepared for the festive season and enjoyed blockbuster releases at the cinema.

Karen Johnson, Head of Retail at Barclays, said: ‘Brits are still prioritising quality time out with family and friends, evidenced by the strong performance of pubs and cinemas in November. People are finding to find ways to enjoy life’s little luxuries, and the festive season is no exception, with consumers making cutbacks so they can afford magical moments.

“After a tentative recovery, retail’s performance was dampened in early November. However, many shoppers use the Black Friday sales period to get discounted gifts for loved ones and cross items off their wishlists, providing a boost for retailers.”

Jack Meaning, Chief UK Economist at Barclays, said: “ Understandably, a number of factors weighed on consumer spending in November, notably easing consumer confidence post-summer, and expectations that post-Budget, inflation and interest rates will stay higher in the coming months. Looking ahead, the extent to which we see a seasonal bounce around Black Friday and Christmas will serve as a good test of the economy going into 2025.”

Essential spending dropped -3.1 per cent in November – its greatest fall in over five years and the category’s third consecutive month of decline. This was due to a slowdown in supermarket spend, which decreased -1.8 per cent, which comes as two thirds (64 per cent) say they are looking for ways to reduce the cost of their weekly shop, up two percentage points from October.

Consumer confidence in the UK and global economy also declined in the month, both now at 25 per cent, down from 31 per cent and 30 per cent respectively in October. Meanwhile, inflation concerns climbed four percentage points  after falling in October, returning to September levels at 87 per cent.

Despite this, in November, consumers’ confidence in their ability to spend on non-essential items reached its highest level since February, at 58 per cent. This was reflected in the performance of non-essential spending in the month, up 0.8 per cent.

Gladiator II and Wicked spell success for the big screen

It was another golden month for entertainment, with overall spending up 10.8 per cent. Bookings for blockbuster hits Gladiator II, Wicked and Paddington in Peru meant cinema spending increased 22.8 per cent year-on year.

The small screen also proved popular, with growth in spending on digital content & subscriptions ringing in at 8.3 per cent. The live stream of Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson’s boxing match and popular TV series such as Dune Prophecy and Arcane: League of Legends encouraged Brits to shelter indoors and enjoy a night on the sofa, while streamflation – the rising cost of content subscriptions – continued to have an impact.

Retail on ice

After enjoying three months of growth, retail experienced a lull in the run up to the seasonal sales period, down -2.0 per cent. November’s cold snap hampered high street footfall; general retailers fell -1.7 per cent (after growing 5.2 per cent in October), while clothing and sports & outdoor contracted -5.6 per cent and -11.5 per cent respectively.

Half of Brits (48 per cent) say they are cutting back on discretionary spending, with 49 per cent of this group reducing spending on new clothes and accessories. However, retail’s slowdown could be a result of shoppers holding out for the Black Friday sale at the end of the month; a fifth of festive consumers (19 per cent) said they were planning to take advantage of the seasonal discounts during this period.

Controlling Christmas costs

To keep Christmas expenses under control, a third (34 per cent) of those that celebrate are keeping an eye out for festive offers, while one in four (26 per cent) are buying presents in advance to spread costs. Over a quarter (28 per cent) expect this Christmas to be more expensive than last year – however, this is down from one in three (33 per cent) who said this last year.

Those that think it will be more costly estimate they will spend an additional £304 this year. When asked about anticipated Christmas expenses, presents for loved ones topped the list, with gift-givers expecting to spend £204 each on average. Festive food and drink came in next, at £94, followed by Christmas parties and social events, at £51.

More than a third of Brits (36 per cent) say that because Christmas brings them joy, they are prioritising spending on the festive period this year, even though they are otherwise trying to stick to a budget. Of these seasonal spenders, one third (33 per cent) plan to splurge on meals out with friends and family, while 26 per cent will splash out on an at-home Christmas celebration.

Escaping the winter blues

The overall hospitality & leisure category enjoyed a strong month, up 4.7 per cent. In the run up to Christmas party season, bars, pubs and clubs saw their highest growth since July 2024, up 3.5 per cent. The shorter days and cooler weather closing in also meant indoor venues were in demand, with restaurants, cafes, and bakeries also moving back into growth (2.1 per cent).

Travel increased in November (up 6.0 per cent) largely owing to increased spending at airlines (10.6 per cent) and travel agents (7.3 per cent). Hotels, resorts and accommodation grew by 5.5 per cent, an increase from 3.2 per cent in October 2024 and the category’s highest growth since October 2023, as the winter blues seemingly prompted Brits to book getaways.

The post Hong Kong International Boat Show deemed a great success appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

The Hong Kong International Boat Show 2024 was hailed as a resounding success based on positive feedback from participants at the event.

The Show, organised by Club Marina Cove, is widely regarded by the boating industry as the premier event in the Asia Pacific.

The 25th Edition featured around 50 boats from Italy, France, Finland, Spain, UK, USA, and China drawing approximately 5,000 visitors during its four-day duration.

A global boating hub rises

With the increasing popularity of boating, the demand for boats of different designs and makes has grown steadily.

Hong Kong’s unique waterscape of 261 islands is a distinct asset to its development as a major boating centre.

That said, the Show is widely regarded as Hong Kong’s most popular and successful boating event which serves as an important platform for the promotion of boating and water sports as well as other related trades including financing, insurance and marine communications.

Club Marina Cove general manager Winnie Ng, said the Club will continue to support the development of the boating industry which has a growing importance in the local economy.

She said: “We hope the Government could recognise the increasing demand for pleasure boat moorings and berths. An increase could benefit the industry which in turn contributes to more employment and business for shipyards, marine equipment, services and supplies and marine tourism.”

Frasers Hospitality lauded for ESG achievements in Australia

The post Frasers Hospitality lauded for ESG achievements in Australia appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Frasers Property’s hotel management arm Frasers Hospitality announced that it has received a 1-star Green Star Performance (GSP) portfolio rating by the Green Building of Council of Australia (GBCA) for its owned portfolio in Australia.

This makes Fraser Hospitality the first GSP-rated hospitality portfolio in Australia.

The company’s commitment to raising sustainability standards across its global portfolio is also further affirmed by its recognition as a Regional Sector Leader in the Asia/Hotel category and five-star rating in the recent GRESB 2024 assessment.

A broach range of key factors

Frasers Hospitality’s GSP portfolio rating recognises the efficiencies achieved across a broad range of factors including water and energy for its owned portfolio in Australia, comprising five properties namely, Capri by Fraser Brisbane, Fraser Suites Perth, Fraser Suites Sydney, Novotel Sydney Darling Square, and Novotel Melbourne on Collins.

Founded by the GBCA, Green Star is an internationally recognised rating system that sets benchmarks for healthy, resilient, positive buildings and places in Australia.

Aligning with Frasers Property’s Group Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Goals, Frasers Hospitality endeavours to elevate its portfolio and property rating in the coming years with further reduction in energy and water consumption through improved efficiencies.

A regional leader

Frasers Hospitality also recently attained the Regional Sector Leadership in the Asia /Hotel category awarded by GRESB with a five-star rating in the 2024 assessment.

This is an affirmation of Frasers Hospitality’s ongoing commitment to improving the overall ESG performance of its portfolio.

As a globally recognised industry benchmark, GRESB remains an important indicator of Frasers Hospitality’s ESG performance relative to its peers.

Frasers Hospitality chief executive Eu Chin Fen said of the double milestone: “The dual achievement of Green Star Performance portfolio certification in Australia and the GRESB 2024 Regional Sector Leadership award underscores Frasers Hospitality’s commitment to integrating sustainability throughout our portfolio whilst maintaining hospitality excellence. This marks a significant milestone in our long-term sustainability journey as we continue to drive sustainable and responsible hospitality development within our portfolio.”
