Asia Pacific airline growth surges despite challenges

The post Asia Pacific airline growth surges despite challenges appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Leaders of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), gathered for its 68th Assembly of Presidents in Brunei Darussalam on 12th and 13th November to discuss the future of aviation in the region.

Discussing the theme Jetting into 2050: Future Proofing Asian Aviation, airline leaders expressed their optimism as regional air travel and cargo growth continues to surpass the global industry’s growth, while load factors remain steadfastly strong.

Reflecting the collective priorities and shared resolve of Asian airline leaders, the Assembly of Presidents passed a series of resolutions during the event.

Relevant decisions pertained to sustainability, aviation safety, and the streamlining of regulations.

A commitment to sustainability

Airlines are firmly committed to reducing their carbon footprint.  With extreme weather events on the rise, airline leaders are only too aware of the risks to aviation safety from climate change.

With Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in short supply, AAPA believes that a multi-prong strategy in line with the ICAO net zero emissions reduction roadmap, is critical to meeting the industry’s net zero emissions target.

The Assembly passed a resolution calling on governments, suppliers, air navigation service providers and airlines to deploy all aspects of the ICAO roadmap, namely SAF, breakthrough technology, CORSIA offsets, and operational efficiency, in pursuing the net zero emissions by 2050 goal.

In particular, SAF produced by co-processing sustainable feedstock together with crude fossil fuel in conventional aviation fuel refineries, is a cost-effective way to stimulate SAF supply.

Airlines and fuel suppliers could give impetus to the transition to SAF with co-processed SAF being made available at airports immediately.

AAPA director-general Subhas Menon said of this: “Every new generation of aircraft and engine delivers 15 to 20 percent more fuel efficiency.  The acceleration of plans for carbon-friendly aircraft and propulsion systems is an effective pathway to the common goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, starting with short-haul aircraft that currently account for some 28 percent of industry emissions.  With delays in the delivery of new generation aircraft, airlines are extending the use of older equipment.  A strategy that prioritises technology alongside SAF, is a surer route to carbon neutrality, than one over-reliant on SAF.”

Emphasising safety

Aviation safety remains the number one priority of all airlines.

The Assembly adopted a resolution calling for civil aviation authorities, aviation safety agencies and airlines to work closely together to share best practices through data analysis, to mitigate risks such as the loss of control in-flight.

The resolution also called on all stakeholders to support the adoption of safety measures that address the most critical risk categories identified in the Asia Pacific region.

Menon said of this: “The Assembly welcomed the results and recommendations of the safety culture survey conducted by the Flight Safety Foundation, as aviation safety is about promoting a proactive safety culture, leveraging data and sharing best practices to improve performance.”

What price disruptions?

The Assembly of Presidents also acknowledged that supply chain disruptions and air space closures are leading to more flight diversions, delays, and cancellations, while also inhibiting future growth.

Such issues, including component failures and labour shortages were impinging on schedule reliability.

Conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war and in the Middle East have resulted in airspace closures, exacerbating the situation.  Knee-jerk reactions by some governments target only the symptoms of failure, while burdening airlines with more cost and complexity.

A third resolution was passed calling on governments to refrain from introducing unilateral measures that would disproportionately inconvenience the travelling public and increase the cost burden on the airline industry, while achieving limited benefits.

There needed to be greater recognition of the value of aviation to the global economy, and closer collaboration amongst governments, industry, and service providers, to streamline protocols for international travel.

Menon concluded: “The outlook for the region’s airlines is broadly positive, given the sustained demand for air travel and strong rebound in trade activity.  It is a remarkable recovery on key metrics, considering that air transport ground to an almost complete standstill for two years during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.  This is also a timely testament to the industry’s endurance and longevity as we commemorate the 80thAnniversary of the ICAO Chicago Convention in 2024. By keeping the travelling public and the economies we serve at the core of our strategy, the industry is well positioned to tackle upcoming challenges and pursue sustainable growth in the years ahead.”

Over 400 delegates from over 50 countries are expected to attend the 18th annual Global Citizenship Conference hosted by Henley & Partners in Singapore this month.

Slated from 27th to 29th November, the annual conference is known as the world’s largest and most significant conference on investment migration, bringing together presidents and prime ministers, other senior government ministers and officials, and leading academics, as well as top-tier private client advisors and wealth management professionals and financial and business media.

Henley & Partners group chair Dr Christian H. Kalin remarked about the timely relevance of connecting across borders as global citizens.

Kalin said: “The Great Wealth Migration, as we call it, reflects a global trend fueled by geopolitical instability, economic uncertainty, the climate crisis, and technological disruption. Wealthy individuals are increasingly recognizing that, in an interconnected world, relying solely on any one nation as a place of residence or citizenship can be a risk they are no longer willing to take. As they consider their options, however, there is a crucial opportunity to reflect on the broader implications of their decisions.”

What’s on this year’s agenda?

The 2024 conference program features sophisticated content on the dynamics shaping the mobility options of wealthy families today.

The conference will explore legal and economic developments and their implications, societal impacts relevant to global citizens, and trends in investment and wealth migration, along with regulatory and tax changes and the evolving concept of citizenship.

Delegates will have the opportunity to engage with some of the world’s finest minds and latest ideas around global citizenship and interconnectivity and discover how to harness the power of global mobility.

Notable key speakers at the conference include the Prime Minister of Grenada Dickon Mitchell, Prime Minister of Grenada, and Dr Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Former Maldivian President and current secretary-general of the Climate Vulnerable Forum Mohamed Nasheed will also share his insights along with senior government officials from Indonesia, Montenegro, and the South Pacific.

Legendary global investor and best-selling author Jim Rogers will likewise offer his perspective on global financial trends.

Other distinguished speakers include Dr Parag Khanna, founder and CEO of Climate Alpha; Professor Mehari Taddele Maru of the European University Institute and John Hopkins University; Irene Mia, senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies; and Balaji Srinivasan, American tech entrepreneur, investor, and author of The Network State.

Entrust, a global leader in providing identity-centric security solutions,  released key insights from its Seamless Travel Experience Survey, which aimed to understand international travelers’ expectations for a smoother, more efficient travel experience. Surveying over 2,000 frequent flyers across the G20, the study highlights the increasing demand for frictionless border control and enhanced security technologies.

The survey reveals that the majority of respondents encounter common challenges during international travel, particularly in the areas of customs, immigration, and visa applications. According to the data, 66% of travelers express a preference for biometric solutions like biometric corridors – a path or location that uses biometric technology to process people without the need for manual processes – and remote identity verification, favoring these advancements over traditional checkpoints. This trend is strongest in India, where support reaches 88%, underscoring a global shift towards advanced, secure travel experiences.

Key Findings from the Seamless Travel Survey:

  • Biometric Preferences: Travellers increasingly value biometric corridors, with 92% indicating they would use such options if they reduced airport wait times by 20–30%. Support for biometrics remains consistently high worldwide, with India showing the strongest demand, and Canada and Spain at 53% and 56% respectively, where such programs are already piloted.
  • Top Pain Points: Immigrations and customs processes rank as the most challenging steps upon arrival. While respondents appreciate improvements in airline apps and online check-ins, border procedures are cited as areas in need of transformation, especially the visa/ETA application process and security screenings.
  • Data Privacy and Digitalization Concerns: While comfortable with biometric usage, 47% of UK respondents, along with 32% from the U.S., rank potential technological failures as their primary concern. Data privacy also emerged as a significant factor, with travelers urging transparency in how their data is managed and protected.
  • Future Solutions for Seamless Travel: Surveyed travelers identified three top advancements they desire: electronic visa applications, remote identity verification, and e-passports, with each offering faster, more secure border experiences. The U.K. leads in prioritizing e-passports, while global preferences align on the need for electronic visas and identity verification.
  • The impact of the CrowdStrike global travel disruption incident: Although 42% of respondents in a follow-up survey were personally impacted by the incident, and nearly half (47%) agreed it highlighted an overreliance on technological weak links, two-thirds also said that were still interested in adopting new technology in travel.

“These findings emphasize the global shift toward seamless, biometric-powered travel solutions,” said Gordon Wilson, Vice President of Identity Verification at Entrust. “Travelers are calling for an experience where security meets convenience, but with weather, engineering, and worker issues already causing regular disruption, technology needs to be set up to ensure that it alleviates the barriers to travel without creating new ones. To help meet this demand, Entrust aims to redefine borderless travel through trusted digital identity.”
