The post Fliggy presents its Mid-Autumn Festival Travel Forecast for this year appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Alibaba’s online travel platform Fliggy released the newest edition of its Mid-Autumn Festival Travel Forecast just in time for one of the busiest seasons of the year.

Based on observations of the East Asian travel market over the past few weeks, there has been a significant increase in travel bookings compared to figures registered at the time of this year’s Dragon Boat Festival.

In terms of domestic travel in China, hotel bookings in the country are up by 60 percent compared to where they were during the same period in 2019. Of these, upscale hotel and boutique homestays made up around 60 percent of all bookings.

The forecast also noted how rates for domestic flights and hotels are lower than during the same period last year but slightly higher than in 2019.

What to do and where to go

In terms of getting to specific destinations, the Fliggy forecast noted how car rentals doubled in time for this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, making numbers considerably higher than those registered the year before the pandemic.

A number of seasonal activities have also piqued the interest of would-be travellers, with moon viewings, flower appreciation events, lanterns displays, and temple fairs. Interest in these events is up by 60 percent from where it was last year.

The report shows that popular destinations for the season include Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing, Chongqing, Wuhan, and Xi’an. At the same time, the report also noted increased interest in emergent destinations like the Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Jingdezhen, Yanbian, Datong, and Diqing.

For those heading overseas, many of the trips booked are off to Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Hong Kong, and Indonesia.

Indonesia sets moratorium against hotel construction in Bali

The post Indonesia sets moratorium against hotel construction in Bali appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

The Indonesian government is poised to impose a moratorium against the construction of hotels, villas, and nightspots in the popular resort island of Bali in a bid to curb overdevelopment and overtourism.

As of end-2023, there were 541 hotels operating in Bali, up from 507 in 2019.

The imposition of the moratorium is also part of government plans to reform tourism on the island by way of improved quality in terms of services and amenities, increased opportunities for employment, and the preservation of the area’s cultural heritage.

According to relevant authorities, the moratorium may be in place for up to ten years. This is meant to return a sense of balance to the island destination in terms of security, culture, and its economy.

As of Saturday, 7th September, the island’s interim governor Sang Made Mahendra Jaya proposed that the moratorium should cover four of the busiest areas in Bali.  However, the government has yet to announce when the moratorium will take effect.

Could halal-friendly destinations draw Malaysian tourists to China?

The post Could halal-friendly destinations draw Malaysian tourists to China? appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

In a bid to boost its pandemic-stricken tourism sector, Chinese tourism professionals seek to draw in Malaysian tourists with halal-friendly travel packages.

Not only does this move aim to uplift the travel industry, but it will also deepen diplomatic and economic ties with one of Southeast Asia’s largest Muslim nations.

The move itself is timely thanks to the current surge in Malaysian interest in various tourist destinations in China born of recently eased visa regulations.

Over the past year, industry analysts noted a 20 percent increase in the number of Muslim-Malay travellers making their way to China, specifically to historically Islamic regions like Xinjiang and Ningxia.

Stronger demand at trade fairs

Just last week at this year’s Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair, observers noticed a strong demand for Chinese travel packages, a third of which aimed for the attention of Malaysian Muslims.

According to MATTA president Nigel Wong: “The post-pandemic era and China’s lifting of travel restrictions [are the factors driving] this surge. With increasing awareness of halal-friendly facilities and food options, destinations like Xinjiang, Xi’an and Ningxia are becoming prime locations for Muslim tourists.”

The rise in interest coincides with enhanced visa agreements between China and Malaysia. These were first announced during Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s state visit to the country back in June to commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

More recently, Tourism Malaysia took 200 participants from Chinese online tourism platform JD.COM on a FAM tour of various Malaysian destinations, particularly in Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, and Melaka, to help them draw Chinese travellers into the Southeast Asian country.

2024 WTTC Economic Impact Trends Report shows US still world’s most powerful tourism market

The post 2024 WTTC Economic Impact Trends Report shows US still world’s most powerful tourism market appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) released the 2024 edition of its annual Economic Impact Trends Report.

This most recent edition shows that, despite global travel spending has been slow to recover, the United States remains the world’s most powerful market for travel and tourism.

In the past year, the travel and tourism sectors broke records by contributing a total of US$2.36 trillion to the US economy.

China is not far behind

At the same time, the report notes how China slid into the spot of the world’s second most powerful tourism market, as tourism brought US$1.3 trillion to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in the past year.

Last year, Chinese tourism experienced a massive surge resulting in year-on-year growth of 135.8 percent. Its counterparts in Asia, on the other hand, including the Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia, and the Philippines, struggled to recover despite the relaxing or outright removal of travel restrictions.

Interestingly, the WTTC predicts China will become the world’s largest travel and tourism market within the current decade. Likewise, rapid growth could position India in fourth place, significantly jumping from where it stands now at eighth.

India rose two slots from where it was in last year’s report as its tourism sector made a substantial contribution worth US$231.6 billion to the national economy.

These shifts illustrate the dynamic nature of the global travel and tourism sectors, with emerging markets gaining ground and traditional powerhouses maintaining their strongholds.
