The post The Fullerton Hotel Sydney celebrates 150 years of the General Post Office building appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

The Fullerton Hotel Sydney looked back on the glories of the past as it celebrated the 150th anniversary of its home: Sydney’s historic General Post Office building.

The edifice located on 1 Martin Place turned 150 on Sunday, 1st September, and those at The Fullerton Hotel Sydney feel honoured to be its custodians.

Prior to its current identity as one of the city’s most luxurious accommodations, the building housed Australia’s first-ever global communications hub which ensured its connection with the rest of the world.

Darryl Healey, sales and marketing director for the hotel said: “Here at The Fullerton Hotel Sydney, our team cares deeply about our responsibility to the GPO building and what it represents to the people of Sydney. As one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, the GPO building was home to Sydney’s telegraph operating room for over 70 years and hosted the city’s first public telephone exchange in 1882.”

Caring for an icon

The edifice is characterised by intricate sculptures adorning its exterior along with exquisite depictions of Queen Victoriar, representing an important time in Sydney’s past.

Construction for the General Post Office began in 1866, its design coming to life under the guidance of architect James Barnet. Over time, the structure became a defining symbol of Sydney, its significance comparable to that of the Houses of Parliament in London and the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Healy remarked that the building’s importance to the foundation and growth of Sydney is immeasurable.

He said: “We are fortunate to enjoy its beauty daily. Guests and visitors can appreciate its architectural wonders and delve into its rich history through guided tours with us.”

Healy further expressed that the Fullerton team feels honoured to celebrate this remarkable occasion with the community throughout the year.
