Europe and Saudi local hotspots are traellers favourites in 2025: Wego

The post Europe and Saudi local hotspots are traellers favourites in 2025: Wego appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Wego, the largest online travel marketplace in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), unveils its latest insights on where Saudi travellers have been heading this summer, revealing strong demand for both European getaways and local adventures across the Kingdom.

Europe remains a top draw for Saudi travellers

Wego reports that Europe continues to attract strong interest from Saudi travellers for summer 2025. The most searched destinations this season are Baku, Sarajevo, Tbilisi, London, Moscow, and Milan. Among these, Milan stands out with a 25% year-on-year increase in travel searches.

Other cities maintain their strong popularity, each continuing to attract hundreds of thousands of searches, underscoring Europe’s enduring appeal for Saudi holidaymakers.

International accommodation preferences

When it comes to accommodations, hotels remain the clear favorite for Saudi travelers heading to Europe, accounting for 80.50% of all property searches in 2025. Apartments follow with a 7.06% share, offering travelers the comfort of a home-like setting, while aparthotels (3.70%) and hostels/backpacker options (3.36%) cater to those seeking flexibility and budget-friendly stays.

Luxury is also high on the agenda. Nearly 45% of hotel searches focus on 4-star properties, with 5-star hotels taking 18.72% of interest.

Domestic travel on the rise

Wego data shows that domestic travel bookings captured 35.10% of all summer bookings in 2025, marking a 5.66% increase in share compared to last year. This growth reflects a growing preference among Saudi travellers to experience the Kingdom’s rich cultural, natural, and leisure offerings during the summer season.

The composition of domestic travellers in 2025 continues to show healthy diversification in trip styles. Solo trips remain the largest segment, accounting for 68.30% of domestic travel, while couple trips account for 16.02%, and family trips represent 7.93%. This balanced mix highlights the varied preferences of Saudi travellers, from independent exploration to shared experiences with loved ones.

Top local cities driving summer bookings

Jeddah, Riyadh, Abha, Dammam, Al Madinah, and Jazan are the most booked domestic destinations for summer 2025. Among these, Riyadh saw trip bookings surge by 19.37% YoY, Jeddah recorded an 18.61% growth, and Al Madinah experienced a remarkable 37.18% boost. Dammam’s booking numbers rose by 23.13%, indicating growing interest in the Eastern Province’s beaches and attractions.

The Saudi Tourism Authority’s “Colour Your Summer” 2025 program offers coastal and mountain escapes, major events, and exclusive offers across multiple regions, giving travellers compelling reasons to stay local. Meanwhile, Jeddah Season 2025 spans seven destinations across the city with family entertainment, beaches, and cultural shows along the waterfront, transforming the Red Sea coast into a summer-long attraction.

“The Next 20 Years” is the theme for WiT Singapore 2025

The post “The Next 20 Years” is the theme for WiT Singapore 2025 appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

As Web in Travel (WiT) celebrates two decades of convening the travel industry’s most progressive minds, it now turns decisively toward the future. The theme for this year’s WiT Singapore 2025, held 6–8 October at Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre, is “The Next 20 Years.”   To mark the milestone, WiT has interviewed some of the leading changemakers at the forefront of emerging trends in travel.

Here, Rod Cuthbert, Founder of Viator and serial entrepreneur; Timothy Hughes, Vice President of Corporate Development at Agoda; and Christine Tan, veteran at the crossroads of hospitality tech and distribution, lay out the trends and transformations they think will define travel’s next 20-year chapter:

  • Trend 1: Rod Cuthbert: “Experiences will become the emotional currency of travel. The industry must escape Google’s chokehold.”

Cuthbert predicts that experiences will be the centerpiece of global travel over the next two decades. “People aren’t collecting stuff anymore; they’re collecting memories,” he says. “Walking tours, wine valleys, cultural deep-dives… those moments live forever in your mind.  That shift is irreversible, and it’s going to define the industry.”

Cuthbert warns that innovation is being throttled by tech monopolies.  “Google’s dominance has been bad for tours, activities and the industry at large. No monopolies are good.  We’ve all paid their toll, and they’ve given little back.”

Looking ahead to the next 20 years, he expects demand for richer, real-time recommendations and a more diverse content and distribution ecosystem.  “We’ll need more choice, more platforms, and above all, more authenticity.”

  • Trend 2: Timothy Hughes: “Content will be rewritten and generated in ways we haven’t figured out yet.  We still haven’t solved the old rules.”

From his time at Agoda, Hughes sees the next 20 years dominated by gen AI and the need to reinvent discovery.  “We’re about to break the rules again,” he says. “Content will be rewritten, pushed, displayed and generated in ways we haven’t even figured out yet.  We still haven’t solved the old rules.”

He believes travel remains emotionally unbreakable, but that content trust is under siege.  “It’s possible you’re talking to an AI version of me.  It’s possible you could adjust this video and make me look like Brad Pitt, and no one would know!”

By 2045, he expects transformative change in transport and immersion.  “What we experience in destinations will be dramatically more immersive.  A fusion of human, technology and location.”

  • Trend 3 – Christine Tan: “Hotels are succeeding in driving direct bookings. The power balance is changing.”

Christine Tan, former Managing Director APAC at D-EDGE Hospitality Solutions, predicts a pivotal shift in hospitality distribution over the next two decades.  “From pricing optimization to personalization, AI will be central to refining distribution strategies,” she says.

She sees a growing focus on customer ownership, first-party data and loyalty. “Hotels are investing more and more to strengthen the direct connection with travelers. The rise of direct booking strategies is real.”

Tan also believes some long-held practices will collapse. “Check-in should disappear.  The 3pm check-in and 10am checkout rules should be gone.  The fact that you can’t book a connecting room should go too.”

This year’s WiT Singapore 2025 will feature speakers from across travel, technology, finance and media.

“Our industry has always thrived on transformation,” added Siew Hoon Yeoh, WiT’s Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief.  “These leaders are predicting change – with an invitation to get on board and go help create it.  If the past 20 years were about surviving digital disruption, the next 20 will be about defining what travel means for a new generation.”

Siyam World Maldives Launches the Maldives’ First Resort-Based Full-Scale Plastic Upcycling Center in Collaboration with CLEAN Maldives

The post Siyam World Maldives Launches the Maldives’ First Resort-Based Full-Scale Plastic Upcycling Center in Collaboration with CLEAN Maldives appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

In a landmark move for sustainable hospitality in the Maldives, Siyam World Maldives has unveiled the nation’s first dedicated Plastic Upcycling Center in collaboration with local environmental NGO CLEAN Maldives. The project marks a major step forward in sustainable resort operations and is already sparking wider conversations across the country about responsible waste management and community-led environmental action.

Designed to turn discarded plastic items, such as oil containers, cleaning product drums, and shampoo bottles, into functional products like sunbeds, planters, and outdoor seating, the upcycling center is the first of its kind to operate at this scale in the Maldives at a resort. While other small-scale efforts have existed previously, including one formerly active in Malé and limited facilities elsewhere, this represents a nation-first in terms of scale, circular process, and community integration on a resort island.

Beyond resort-generated waste, the facility also accepts plastic from the nearby inhabited island of Kudafari, reinforcing Siyam World’s role in supporting surrounding communities. In a shared value model, 60% of the upcycled items will remain at the resort, while 40% will be distributed by CLEAN Maldives, with both partners committing to donating select products for use in public spaces like island parks, beaches, and communal areas.

To date, the center recycles approximately 800 kg of hard plastics per month, contributing over 10,000 kg annually to the circular economy. In addition, the facility has created three new employment opportunities, further strengthening Siyam World’s impact in the local community. The new center is also set to play an educational role. Guided tours for guests and school groups will be introduced as part of the resort’s environmental awareness efforts, helping to showcase the importance of plastic reduction, recycling, and upcycling through real-world solutions.

The facility was formally inaugurated during a ceremony attended by Abdulla Thamheed, Vice President of Sun Siyam Resorts, and Hafsath Aleem, President and Founder of CLEAN Maldives. It was developed as part of the Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia (PLEASE) Project, an initiative funded by the World Bank and implemented by SACEP with support from UNOPS.

The launch event drew support from representatives of UNOPS, the World Bank, local councils, and members of the resort’s staff, highlighting how public-private partnerships can effectively address environmental challenges in island nations.

Already, the ripple effects are being felt across the industry. Other resorts have expressed interest in replicating the model or launching similar collaborations with local NGOs—pointing to a wider shift toward conscious, community-focused tourism in the Maldives. This initiative proudly supports the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
  • SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
  • SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

While the project operates independently of the group’s Sun Siyam Cares sustainability framework, it mirrors the same values: investing in long-term solutions, empowering local communities, and championing practical innovation that delivers real change.

As Siyam World and CLEAN Maldives look to the future, the upcycling facility stands as a living example of what’s possible when creativity, collaboration, and environmental purpose come together—proving that waste doesn’t have to be the end of the story, but the start of something better.

By opening its doors to school visits and guided guest tours, Siyam World aims to raise awareness and inspire action—offering a tangible experience of the circular economy in motion.

FHRAI Urges Rationalisation of GST in Tourism

The post FHRAI Urges Rationalisation of GST in Tourism appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

The Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI), representing the hospitality industry across the country, has requested Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Finance Minister and Chairperson of the GST Council, for the rationalisation of GST in the tourism and hospitality sector. The appeal seeks to position Indian tourism as a driver of economic growth while enhancing its global competitiveness in alignment with India’s Vision 2047.

FHRAI welcomed the landmark GST reforms announced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 15 August 2025, describing them as a reflection of the Government’s commitment to strengthening India’s tax regime, simplifying compliance, and paving the way for sustained growth. Tourism has long been one of India’s most strategic growth pillars, contributing nearly five per cent to the nation’s GDP, with the potential to double this contribution if supported by conducive policy measures. It remains one of the largest employment generators, offering extensive opportunities for youth and women, and is recognised for its high multiplier effect, where every rupee invested in hospitality generates a return of 3.5 rupees in output, while one direct job in the sector creates an additional 3.2 indirect jobs.

Despite this strong potential, India’s current GST structure makes the tourism sector less competitive compared to its Asian peers. Countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Malaysia operate under lower tax regimes, ranging between 6 and 10 per cent, which helps them attract significantly larger tourist inflows. In contrast, India’s higher GST structure reduces affordability and weakens its appeal for international travellers.

FHRAI has therefore emphasised the need for uniformity and simplicity in GST to make tourism services more accessible and globally competitive. It has recommended the introduction of a uniform GST rate of five per cent with input tax credit across all hospitality and tourism services. Such a move would ease compliance and reduce the cost burden for both domestic and international travellers. The association has also called for doing away with the linking of GST on food and beverage services from hotel room tariffs, pointing out that the current linkage creates operational inefficiencies and revenue losses for hotels. In addition, it has requested that past GST payments be regularised on an “as is basis” to address demand notices arising from earlier ambiguities in the interpretation of tariff values and service classifications.

According to FHRAI, these measures will significantly improve the ease of doing business in the tourism and hospitality sector and will allow the industry to unlock its full potential. Rationalising GST would not only enhance competitiveness but also align India with global standards, thereby strengthening the country’s standing as a world-class tourism destination.

Commenting on the request, K. Syama Raju, President, FHRAI, said, “Tourism is not just about travel—it is a national growth engine with one of the highest multiplier effects in the economy. Rationalising GST is essential for making India globally competitive, affordable for travellers, and attractive for investors. With supportive policy measures, Indian tourism can double its contribution to GDP, create millions of jobs, and play a pivotal role in achieving the Government’s Vision 2047 of a developed India.”

FHRAI reaffirmed the hospitality industry’s commitment to partnering with the Government in strengthening the economy, advancing cultural diplomacy, and positioning India as a global tourism powerhouse. The Federation believes that a rationalised GST will act as a catalyst for growth, unlocking new opportunities for the sector and accelerating India’s journey towards becoming a developed economy by 2047.

Azerbaijan reports an increase of over 20 percent in Kazakhstani arrivals

The post Azerbaijan reports an increase of over 20 percent in Kazakhstani arrivals appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

The State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan reports that the number of tourist arrivals from Kazakhstan into the country is up 20.6 percent from 2024.

Currently, Kazakhstan holds seventh place in terms of arrivals, its nationals making up four percent of all inbound visits to Azerbaijan.

In the first seven months of this year, Azerbaijan welcomed 1.48 million foreign nationals from 182 countries, marking a decrease of 1.7 percent from the 2024 total in the same period.

The surge in Kazakhstani arrivals is attributed to the neighbouring nation’s  growing interest in Azerbaijan.

Other key factors include strengthened political dialogue, cultural ties, and growing business exchanges between the two nations.

Direct air connections, a simplified visa regime, and shared historical and linguistic roots also had their part to play in the surge in numbers.

Key findings for H1-2025

Alongside Kazakhstan, the top source markets for Azerbaijan include Russia, Turkiye, India, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Georgia.

Other countries showing notable growth in visitor numbers were Tajikistan, Israel, China, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Jordan, and Uzbekistan.

The data also pointed out that 75.5 of foreign visitors arrived by air, benefiting from direct flights and simplified travel procedures.

On the other hand, 23.1 percent entered the country via land transport, and 1.4 percent arrived by sea.

Meanwhile, outbound travel from Azerbaijan saw a slight decline during the same period.

Turkiye remained the leading destination for Azerbaijani travelers, accounting for 40.6 percent of departures; while Russia ranked second with 15.7 percent, marking a significant 28.5 percent increase.

Georgia and Iran followed, with visits to Georgia up by nearly 26 percent.

The remaining 23.6 percent of Azerbaijani tourists made their way to other destinations throughout Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

The Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT), Department of Transportation (DOTr), and Department of Budget and Management (DBM) launched the second route of the Love Bus Libreng Sakay (Love Bus Free Ride) programme in Cebu earlier today, 22nd August.

Tourism secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, Transportation secretary Vince Dizon, and Budget secretary Amenah Pangandaman led the ceremonial rollout in Cebu City.

Also present at the launch were DOT undersecretary Shahlimar Hofer Tamano; DOTr undersecretaries Mark Pastor, Giovanni Lopez, and Ramon Reyes; DBM undersecretaries Wilford Wong and Goddes Hope Libiran; Loumer Bernabe, executive director of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB); LTFRB 7 (Central Visayas) director Eduardo Montealto; and DOT-7 assistant regional director Gelena Asis-Dimpas.

An inclusive way to get around

Frasco said the Love Bus Libreng Sakay reflects the current administration’s vow to improve mobility for local and international tourists, noting that the programme makes travel more comfortable and accessible whilst showcasing Cebu’s world-class destinations.

The tourism secretary added that the buses ensure inclusivity for persons with disabilities, senior citizens, women, and children, further uplifting communities and enriching the tourism experience.
