Nepal’s LGBTQ+ community holds Pride rally

The post Nepal’s LGBTQ+ community holds Pride rally appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Members of the Nepal’s LGBTQ+ community and supporters rallied in the capital Sunday in the annual pride rally, which was the first since a major cut in funding after the U.S. government ceased financial aid. Hundreds of people took part in the rally through the heart of Kathmandu, playing music and dancing in the Gai Jatra festival, which is celebrated to remember family members who have passed away during the year. But it has long drawn colorful parades by bringing in sexual minorities to join in on the festivities.

Nepal’s LGBTQ+ campaign has been hit after U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration began dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development, which was responsible for humanitarian aid.

Over the years, USAID and others stepped in and partnered with help centers to support initiatives like HIV prevention and care, and safe-sex counselling. The U.S. funds were vital for running the centers and clinics that helped with distributing free condoms, screenings and follow-up treatment for people with HIV. Now the USAID office in Nepal is closed.

“Because of the cut in funding many of the services we have been providing to the community have been hit badly, but we are not discouraged but are hopeful we will get alternative sources and fundings to help us restart those services,” said Simran Sherchan, a LGBTQ+ rights activist in the rally.

Torrential rains in southern Japan cause travel disruptions

The post Torrential rains in southern Japan cause travel disruptions appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Downpours on Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu caused flooding and mudslides on Monday, injuring a number of people and disrupting travel during a Buddhist holiday week. Evacuation advisories were issued and several people were reported missing. A low-pressure system has been stuck over the region since last week, dumping torrential rain over the southern prefecture of Kagoshima and the island’s northern part.

The Japan Meteorological Agency early Monday issued the highest-level warning in the prefecture of Kumamoto, saying rainfall had exceeded 40 centimeters (15.7 inches) in the last 24 hours and more was expected through Tuesday afternoon over Kyushu. The agency later downgraded the alert for Kumamoto as the showers moved east toward the Tokyo region, but kept a lower-level warning for western Japan, where up to 20 centimeters (7.8 inches) of rainfall was expected by noon Tuesday.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said local authorities have issued evacuation advisories to tens of thousands of people in Kumamoto and six other prefectures in the region. Defense troops were deployed to Kagoshima to provide fresh water to the residents in the affected areas, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said.

In Kumamoto, rescue workers were looking for missing people. A man who went missing while three of his family members waited in a car to head to an evacuation center just as a mudslide hit. The people in the car were rescued, but the man was later found with no vital signs, according to prefecture officials.

At another location in Kumamoto, an elderly woman was found inside a vehicle that had fallen into a river, but her condition was unknown. Three others were reported missing after falling into swollen rivers, while a person buried underneath a mudslide was rescued alive. Two people were also reported missing after falling into rivers in nearby Fukuoka prefecture.

In Kamiamakusa city, about 20 people stranded at a camping site and a couple of other residential areas are waiting for rescuers, NHK public television reported. Television footage showed muddy water gushing down, carrying broken trees and branches, and residents wading through knee-deep floodwater.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said his government was supporting search and rescue operations for the missing and helping others in affected areas. He urged residents “to use maximum caution,” encouraging them to “please prioritize actions to save your lives.”

Heavy rain also impacted people traveling during Japan’s Buddhist “Bon” holiday week.

Bullet trains connecting Kagoshima and Hakata in northern Kyushu, as well as local train services, were suspended Monday morning. While trains partially resumed in Kyushu, services were starting to be affected in western Japan as heavy rains gradually headed east.

About 6,000 households were out of power in Kumamoto, according to Kyushu Electric Power Co., but nearly half got the power back later Monday.

The torrential rains last week left one person missing and four injured in Kagoshima.

Roland Berger’s Richard Stolz champions stellar traveller experience, human touch key to stay ahead

The post Roland Berger’s Richard Stolz champions stellar traveller experience, human touch key to stay ahead appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

He explores the market shifts, traveller trends, and the future of tourism in the Middle East.

As the Middle East continues to emerge as a global travel hub, the region’s tourism sector is navigating rapid changes in traveller expectations, source market dynamics, and competition. For businesses in this industry, staying relevant requires not only operational excellence but also strategic foresight and adaptability.

Richard Stolz, Partner for Tourism, Travel, & Leisure at Roland Berger, offers his invaluable insights, drawn from his more than 14 years of strategic consulting experience. He has worked across a diverse range of industries, including tourism, travel, transport, airlines & aviation, leisure, hospitality, entertainment, education, and healthcare, helping businesses grow.

Based in Dubai, Stolz’s functional experience spans corporate strategy, business development, growth, market entry, market assessment, project management, business transformation, and organisational effectiveness. He also regularly shares his industry perspectives through authored columns, media commentary, and interviews, contributing to leading publications and shaping conversations around global tourism and related industries.

Navigating the Middle East’s tourism market shifts

In an interview with Stolz, he shared his perspectives on the evolving dynamics of the Middle East’s travel and tourism industry and what businesses must focus on to stay competitive in the region.

When asked how the travel industry in the Middle East is evolving, Stolz noted a constant increase in visitor numbers, especially in major hubs such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi. He highlighted the growing importance of source market volume, including the CIS, the Indian Subcontinent, and Mainland China.

“All key players in the tourism and travel value chain are needed to provide a stellar traveller experience,” Stolz said. This includes airports, airlines, ground transport, hotels, and DMCs, amongst others.

On the topic of adapting to shifting source markets and evolving traveller expectations, Stolz emphasised the need for businesses to tailor their offerings, such as food and beverage options, multilingual signage, and ensuring the availability of tour guides fluent in languages like Mandarin. Additionally, DMCs should consider offering packaged tours directly ‘on the doorstep’ in key source markets.

Addressing the ongoing talent challenge in the region’s tourism and hospitality sector, Stolz stressed that in order to attract, develop, and retain skilled talent in a competitive hospitality and tourism labour market, companies must provide a good work-life balance. “Offer attractive talent development and training schemes,” he added. He also suggested strengthening collaborations with leading tourism and hospitality schools globally and in the Middle East to ensure access to the best and motivated professionals.

Whilst innovation continues to redefine the industry, Stolz believes that agility must be matched with a focus on people and keeping the human touch in an organisation. “The element of building real and motivated teams is still key,” he noted.

Looking to the future, Stolz expects several trends to shape the region’s tourism landscape. He pointed to longer average lengths of stay, with destinations such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi being increasingly seen as viable options for long-term living rather than just for vacations. He also highlighted the growing number of emerging destinations across Saudi Arabia, which are set to enhance the GCC’s overall tourism offering.

Recognising excellence in tourism

As a judge for the TDM Travel Trade Excellence Awards 2025 – Middle East, Stolz will be placing strong emphasis on recognising entities that consistently deliver best-in-class traveller experiences and those who set the benchmark for excellence and continue to raise industry standards.

Emirates changes safety rules for customer usage of power banks onboard

The post Emirates changes safety rules for customer usage of power banks onboard appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

A power bank is a portable, rechargeable device primarily designed to provide power to other electronic devices such smart phones, tablets, laptops and cameras. Emirates customers are still permitted to carry one power bank onboard with specific conditions listed below, but the power banks may not be used while in the aircraft cabin – neither to charge devices from the power bank, nor to be charged themselves using the aircrafts’ power source.

Emirates’ new regulations include:

  • Emirates customers may carry one power bank that is under 100 Watt Hours.
  • Power banks may not be used to charge any personal devices onboard.
  • Charging a power bank using the aircraft’s power supply is not permitted.
  • All power banks accepted for transport must have capacity rating information available.
  • Power banks may not be placed in the overhead stowage bin onboard the aircraft and must now be placed in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front of you.
  • Power banks are not permitted in checked luggage (existing rule).

Why is Emirates making this change?

After a comprehensive safety review, Emirates is taking a firm and proactive stance to mitigate risk when it comes to power banks onboard. There has been a significant growth in customers using power banks in recent years, resulting in an increasing number of lithium battery-related incidents onboard flights across the wider aviation industry.

Power banks primarily utilize lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, and their function is as a portable battery pack designed to recharge devices on the go. The batteries contain lithium ions suspended in an electrolyte solution. The ions flow through the electrolyte, travelling back and forth between two electrodes as the battery charges and discharges. If the battery is overcharged or damaged, it may result in ‘thermal runaway.’ Thermal runaway in batteries is a self-accelerating process where heat generation within a battery cell exceeds its ability to dissipate heat, leading to a rapid and uncontrollable temperature increase. This can result in dangerous consequences like fire, explosions, and the release of toxic gases.

Most phones and sophisticated lithium battery-powered devices have an internal trickle system which slowly adds current into the battery to prevent overcharging, but many basic power banks may not have this safeguard, increasing the risk. All power banks are subject to the new rules onboard Emirates.

Emirates new regulations will significantly reduce risks associated with power banks by prohibiting their use while onboard the aircraft. Storing power banks in accessible locations within the cabin ensures that in the rare event of a fire, trained cabin crew can quickly respond and extinguish the fire.

The One Safety Rule You Should Never Break When Solo Camping

The post The One Safety Rule You Should Never Break When Solo Camping appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Representative Image

More people than ever are choosing to camp alone. The freedom to explore at your own pace, disconnect from daily stress, and challenge yourself in nature has made solo camping incredibly popular. But while scrolling through stunning sunrise photos and remote location tags feels inspiring, one expert warns there’s a hidden danger that a lot of solo adventurers don’t consider.

According to camping expert Andy Halliday from Lexrope, a UK-based outdoor gear specialist, one simple social media habit could be putting solo campers in danger.

“The biggest mistake I see solo campers making isn’t the gear they bring or their weather preparation,” says Andy. “It’s what they post online while they’re out there alone.”

The safety rule Andy wants every solo camper to know will be revealed through practical advice that could genuinely save lives.

Why Solo Camping Is Taking Off

Solo camping has exploded in popularity, especially since people started seeking more meaningful ways to spend their free time. The appeal is obvious: complete control over your itinerary, the chance to switch off, and personal growth that comes from navigating challenges independently.

“I’ve seen a massive increase in people buying solo camping gear,” explains Andy. “They want that authentic outdoor experience without having to coordinate with others or compromise on their plans.”

But this independence comes with risks that group campers rarely face.

The Golden Rule: Never Post in Real-Time

Here’s the safety rule that could save your life: never share your location or activities on social media while you’re still there. This means no Instagram stories from your tent, no Facebook check-ins at remote campsites, and no Snapchat updates showing your exact whereabouts.

“When you post a photo tagged at a specific location while you’re still there, you’re essentially broadcasting that you’re alone and vulnerable,” warns Andy. “It’s like putting up a sign saying ‘one person, isolated location, come and find me’.”

The danger that such posts pose isn’t theoretical. Real-time posting can attract unwanted attention from people with bad intentions, expose you to theft when your home is empty, and even help stalkers track your movements.

Smart Social Media Safety

You don’t have to give up sharing your adventures completely. Here’s how to stay connected safely:

Wait Until You’re Home: Share those breathtaking photos after you return. Your followers will still enjoy them, and you’ll be safe.

Remove Location Data: Disable geotagging on your phone’s camera settings. People often don’t realise their photos automatically include GPS coordinates.

Be Vague About Timing: Instead of “camping at Snowdonia tonight”, try “had an amazing time at Snowdonia last weekend.”

“The best adventure photos often come from reflecting on the experience anyway,” notes Andy. “You’ll choose better shots and write more thoughtful captions when you’re not rushing to post in the moment.”

Additional Solo Camping Safety Tips

Beyond social media awareness, Andy recommends these safety measures:

  • Share Your Plans: Tell someone trustworthy your exact location and expected return time. Set up check-in times.
  • Pack Emergency Communication: Carry a whistle, consider a personal locator beacon for remote areas, and make sure your phone has offline maps downloaded.
  • Trust Your Instincts: If something feels wrong about a location or person, leave immediately. Your gut feeling is worth more than any camping spot.
  • Stay Connected Safely: Use your phone’s emergency features, but keep location services off for social apps.

Andy Halliday, camping expert at Lexrope, commented: “This rule is vital because solo campers are at their most vulnerable when they advertise their isolation in real-time. I’ve heard too many concerning stories from customers who’ve had unexpected visitors at remote campsites after posting their location online. What a lot of people don’t realize is that social media posts create a digital trail, which can be followed by anyone with bad intentions.

“The sad reality is that posting your solo camping adventure as it happens can turn a peaceful retreat into a dangerous situation. Aside from sharing your location, you’re confirming that you’re alone, potentially miles from help, with valuable camping equipment. It’s information that the wrong person can use against you.

“The good news is that staying safe doesn’t mean giving up on sharing your adventures. Some of the most inspiring outdoor content comes from people reflecting on their experiences after they return home. You can still inspire others and document your journey – just do it safely.”
