Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy sees record impact in 2024

The post Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy sees record impact in 2024 appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP), the nonprofit arm of global travel leader Abercrombie & Kent released its 2024 Impact Report today, 31st July.

The report details a record-breaking year of global community support across 25 countries.

Building on over 60 years of community investment since founder Geoffrey Kent established the company’s commitment to supporting local communities, AKP’s £2.1 million in funding supported 70+ projects, directly benefiting 400,000 people through education, health, enterprise, and environmental programmes.

A&K Philanthropy executive director Keith Sproule remarked: “AKP’s mission is to ensure that travel creates lasting, tangible benefits in the places we visit. We believe that the best way to protect our planet’s remaining wilderness is to invest in the people who live there. The linchpin of this effort is our commitment to staffing 17 full-time community development professionals, stretching from Peru to Kenya and Egypt to Cambodia.”

2024 in the numbers

  • 6,300+ children fed daily through school lunch programs in East Africa
  • 800+ students gained access to new classrooms in Cambodia
  • 90 water wells drilled in Siem Reap (2,000+ total funded by AKP since inception))
  • 107 LifeStraw filters installed and 108,000 students in East Africa now benefit from AKP’s Safe Water for Schools Initiative
  • 1,667 bikes delivered to women entrepreneurs in Uganda and Zambia (20,000+ total shipped)
  • 2 containers of life-saving medical supplies sent to hospitals in Uganda and Zambia
  • 25+ countries served across 4 continents

Key highlights from the past year

Education and Health: School Lunch Programme in East Africa

School lunch programmes in Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, and Namibia improved attendance and concentration.

The programme was so effective that one school even saw a 270 percent spike in enrollment.

Education: Building Schools in Cambodia

Since 2018, AKP’s investments in school infrastructure around Siem Reap, Cambodia have benefited more than 1,600 students.

In 2024, AKP built new classroom blocks at Kok Chan and Tapang Primary Schools, serving more than students and helping reduce overcrowding whilst improving the quality of education through added amenities like playgrounds and teaching materials.

Enterprise: Equipping Women to Earn a Living on the Trail

In Peru and Sri Lanka, AKP is advancing women’s economic independence through hiking guide training programs.

In Peru’s Sacred Valley, 12 women from the Village of the Flowers have been trained as trail guides through AKP support.

On Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail, AKP helped train four trail champions and nine assistants in partnership with the Pekoe Trail Organization, with plans to expand the initiative in 2025.

Environment: Saving and Rehabilitating Birds of Prey

Each year in Tasmania, Australia, approximately 100 raptors are killed due to human-related threats, making them among the state’s most threatened wildlife.

Since 2019, A&K has supported the Raptor Refuge, a sanctuary dedicated to sheltering and rehabilitating injured birds of prey.

Just last year, A&K contributed funding for the construction of a flight aviary specifically for the white-bellied eagle, which currently is home to two non-releasable eagles.

The Raptor Refuge plans to build a second flight tunnel that will allow visitors to experience the thrill of a bird of prey landing on their gloved arm.

Everything goes to the cause

In 2024 AKP received £2.1 million in charitable support from A&K Travel Group and generous contributions from A&K guests and donors.

AKP applies 100 percent of guest donations to directly support the donor’s choice of program.

A&K Philanthropy is a 501(c)3 U.S. nonprofit and a registered charity in the U.K. and has earned the GuideStar Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid.org.

SH Minerva returns to the Swan Hellenic Fleet

The post SH Minerva returns to the Swan Hellenic Fleet appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

SH Minerva has returned to the Swan Hellenic fleet, following routine maintenance and preparations to Swan Hellenic’s usual high standards.

The vessel will set sail in November to join her sister ships SH Vega and SH Diana in Ushuaia, where she will begin the 2025–2026 Antarctic winter season.

Then, in March 2026, she will launch Swan Hellenic’s first ever Asia-Pacific Season, taking its award-winning cultural expedition cruises to new horizons that expand its adventurous guests’ discovery opportunities worldwide.

The new in-depth explorations of the Asia-Pacific region include the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Raja Ampat, Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan, offering unforgettable experiences that range from primitive art, ancient rituals and anthropology to historical WWII sites, wildlife, snorkeling and watersports adventures.

SH Minerva’s return marks an exciting new chapter for Swan Hellenic, with a three-ship fleet that takes its guests to live uniquely immersive discovery experiences in the heart of remote destinations all around the world, cruising in refined elegance to “See what others don’t.”

A symbolic return

Swan Hellenic chief executive Andrea Zito said of the revitalised vessel: “We’re delighted to welcome back our flagship SH Minerva. A symbol of Swan Hellenic’s rebirth, her inaugural Asia-Pacific Season will take us to fly our flag across the globe, reaching every ocean and continent. It’s a moment of immense pride for us.”

The cutting-edge expedition ship SH Minerva was built in Helsinki Shipyard OY at the end of 2021 and chartered to Swan Hellenic by the Irish owner, STLC Europe Nine Leasing Ltd.

The parent company of STLC Europe Nine Leasing Ltd, GTLK Europe DAC, was sanctioned by the EU, US and UK back in April-August 2022 due to the designation of the giant Russian leasing company PAO GTLK, which was a parent company of GTLK Europe DAC.

SH Minerva has consequently been idle at Fray Bentos, Uruguay, since April 2022.

In May 2023, GTLK Europe DAC went into liquidation. Joint Liquidators were appointed by the High Court of Ireland and PAO GTLK subsequently lost control of GTLK Europe DAC and all its subsidiaries, including STLC Europe Nine Leasing Ltd.

The Joint Liquidators who now have control of GTLK Europe DAC and its subsidiaries obtained compliance of the sale of GTLK Europe DAC’s assets (including SH Minerva) with all the applicable sanctions.

After lengthy negotiations with the Joint Liquidators, Swan Hellenic finally reacquired SH Minerva from STLC Europe Nine Leasing Ltd in accordance with all applicable sanctions on 25th July of this year using shareholders’ funds.

Propellic: Google AI Mode to redefine the way the world searches for travel online

The post Propellic: Google AI Mode to redefine the way the world searches for travel online appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Propellic founder and chief executive Brennen Bliss recently shared his insights on the recent AI Mode launch in the UK, following the roadmap announcement made by Google CEO Sundar Pichai two weeks ago.

Bliss pointed out that Google’s AI Mode stands to change how travelers research trips.

As he explains it: “Instead of conducting ten separate searches for ‘hotels London,’ ‘London restaurants,’ and ‘London attractions,’ travelers can now ask complex questions like ‘Plan a weekend in London for foodie couples who want boutique hotels near markets and live music venues.’ This shifts travel marketing from keyword optimisation to conversation optimisation. You need to anticipate and answer the full context of how people actually plan trips.”

Scrapping the messy middle

As Bliss explained further, travel marketing professionals are always talking about the messy middle where they cannot easily map a traveler’s buying journey between inspiration and booking.

AI Mode’s rollout further complicates that journey, and travel marketers will be forced to build a strategy around even less data.

Bliss opined: “My recommendation: maintain visibility across all stages of the booking journey. Have answers for top, middle, and bottom of funnel intents. Continue testing and be ready to influence and trial new organic and paid surfaces as they go to market.”

Indeed, the implications for the travel industry are significant, given how most travel companies rely heavily on top-of-funnel content in the form of blog posts, destination guides, and curated itineraries to attract audiences and feed retargeting campaigns.

Given such a scenario, AI Mode is set to disrupt that pipeline dramatically.

Bliss concluded by saying: “Instead of users visiting ten different websites to compare options, they’ll now have one conversation with Google’s AI. That means your content may no longer drive traffic. It may simply train the AI. My prediction? This becomes the default search experience within 12 months, not the two to three years most people are assuming.”

Sands China presents two exhibitions for the Macao International Art Biennale

The post Sands China presents two exhibitions for the Macao International Art Biennale appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Sands China unveiled two themed exhibitions for the Macao International Art Biennale 2025 on Tuesday, 29th July.

One is the special exhibition Dopamine: Fountain of Happiness at The Venetian Macao, showcasing exquisite artworks crafted by internationally renowned contemporary artists in collaboration with Sesame Street.

The other is the collateral exhibition Beyond the Frame: International Contemporary Masterpieces at Sands Gallery.

The exhibitions jointly feature a total of over 80 artistic creations which will remain on display until 15th October of this year.

Cultural Affairs Bureau president Leong Wai Man said of the exhibition: “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale has blossomed into its fourth edition this year, after debuting in 2019. This year’s special exhibitions have scaled new heights, with Sands China’s Dopamine: Fountain of Happiness transforming the European architecture of The Venetian Macao into a theatrical stage that traverses space and time, where Asian, European, and American artistic forces converge, reinterpreting the eternal beauty of ancient Roman mythology with a contemporary touch.”

Macao, as a metropolitan city of arts, invites visitors to wander through and participate naturally in the exhibition, co-creating the emotional resonance of joy and happiness that arts at The Venetian Macao can offer.

Dive into a fountain of happiness

Dopamine: Fountain of Happiness at The Venetian Macao aims to rekindle happiness through the power of dopamine aesthetics, which centres on vivid colours, boundless imagination, and the expression of positive emotions.

This vibrant showcase features nine outstanding artists from Asia, Europe and the United States: Craig & Karl, Bibi Lei, GRAFFLEX, Hei Lok, Ilya Milstein, Jun Oson, Jonni Cheatwood, and Song Zhou.

The artists have reinterpreted globally renowned Sesame Street characters to craft original artworks debuting at Art Macao 2025.

Extending Macao’s curatorial vision of Art + City, the exhibition is set against the picturesque architectural façade of The Venetian Macao.

The artists have reinterpreted globally renowned Sesame Street characters, intertwining them with ancient Roman mythology and the striking palette of dopamine art, each with their own artistic flair.

The result is a series of art pieces created exclusively for Macao, bringing art into genuine encounters with the public in a cross-medium, cross-temporal, and cross-cultural artistic journey.

Likewise, the exhibition’s Sesame Street characters seem to echo this year’s theme with their colourful art cascading across canvases and spaces to stir the deepest part of the viewer’s heart. This extraordinary artistry stands as the most eye-catchingly colourful highlight among this year’s special exhibition series.”

The post Hostelworld Group releases 2025 mid-year report appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Hostelworld officially released its interim results for the six months that ended on 30th June today, 30th July.

The report shows that net bookings and ABV improved throughout the first six months of 2025, returning to growth in late May and continuing positive momentum into June and July

Increasing commission rates post launch of Elevate were also noted, offsetting bed price deflation and weaker than expected US dollar.

Meanwhile, paid cost inflation was observed in Q1, but has since moderated, while marketing as a percentage of generated revenue is expected to be within CMD guidance range on a FY basis.

Likewise, app bookings were up 11 percent year-on-year, reflecting the continued progress of Hostelworld’s social network strategy.

Solid progress

According to Hostelworld CEO Gary Morrison: “While the first half was impacted by several external factors, we saw encouraging positive trends in late May, which have continued through into June and July, including growth in booking volumes and average booking values.”

Morrison pointed out that the company’s strategic initiatives, particularly the early success of its Elevate marketplace tool, are delivering a positive impact on our trading performance.

Thanks to ongoing innovation in Hostelworld’s social network, the company saw significant growth in engagement.

The number of messages sent rose by 42 percent on a trailing six-month basis, and this deep engagement continues to drive growth in app bookings, which are up 11 percent year-on-year.

Also, the number of social members also saw substantial growth, reaching  around three million by the end of June 2025, up from 1.8 million in June 2024.

Morrison added: “We continue to evaluate acquisition opportunities as outlined in our CMD presentation. Reflecting our balanced approach to capital allocation and our commitment to long-term growth in shareholder value, we announced a £5 million share buyback programme on 19 June, alongside the reinstatement of a progressive dividend policy. We expect the interim dividend to be paid on 19th September 2025. Overall, I am encouraged by the results of the foundational work laid in the first half, which positions us strongly for sustained growth from 2026 and beyond, and for delivering on our Vision to be the world’s leading social travel platform.”

Virtuoso Travel Tech Summit 2025 returns in August

The post Virtuoso Travel Tech Summit 2025 returns in August appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Global luxury and experiential travel network Virtuoso announced the return of its annual Travel Tech Summit this August.

Slated for 9th August as part of the 37th Virtuoso Travel Week, the fourth run of the Summit will be held at the Bellagio Resort & Casino and will, yet again, be dedicated to innovation within the luxury travel sector.

As such, the Summit is a one-of-a-kind event that focuses on using smart technology to elevate and enhance human connection, rather than replace it.

Due to high demand, Virtuoso has almost doubled the capacity of this year’s Tech Summit and is expecting 500 attendees.

Delving into ongoing evolution

The upcoming event will be led by tech entrepreneur, investor, and Virtuoso board member Gilad Berenstein who will open the discussion by showcasing key themes in travel technology he has been following over the past year, as well as the development of Virtuoso’s tech ecosystem.

Berenstein said: “One of the things that makes the Travel Tech Summit such a success and something people want to attend year after year is that we continuously evolve the format and topics. In previous years, we’ve focused on showcasing ideas and innovations from outside of Virtuoso for mutual learning, which has fueled an ecosystem of startups tailoring their systems and products for travel advisors. This year, we are highlighting technology developments from within Virtuoso. Thanks to the evolution of Virtuoso’s Tech Innovation Program, the level of tech sophistication in the network has grown exponentially.”

He added that this year’s Tech Summit aims to empower advisors and partners to dive further into the developments available to them through Virtuoso, celebrate in-house innovation and, most importantly, walk away with actionable steps and inspiration they can incorporate into their own businesses.

What to expect at this year’s summit

The tech summit format will range from presentations to panels, Q&A sessions and roundtable discussions, allowing attendees to engage with the innovators and with each other.

They will hear from a variety of Virtuoso advisors, partners and executives during the Travel Tech Summit, including:

  • Betsy Grebinoski of Pique Travel, who will take the stage with Fernanda Barrence of The Trip Boutique – an AI-powered platform that assists advisors in delivering personalised recommendations. They will discuss what an “agency brain” is and why Pique is deploying one.
  • Dianna Rom of Windstar Cruises and Jared Shalhoub of AmaWaterways will discuss how they are using virtual reality (VR) media to evolve from static virtual tours to dynamic, multimedia-rich immersive experiences.
  • Kate Sullivan of Anthology Travel, an independent affiliate of Jetset World Travel, and David Shull of Tern will share how luxury travel is entering the operating system era with more unified systems to automate the ordinary and unlock the extraordinary.
  • Vincent Shacks of Wilderness Destinations will talk about using tech to keep lions and livestock safe in Botswana’s wildlife-rich Okavango region, where conservation partners are using a real-time Lion Alert System powered by GPS collars and geofencing.
  • Virtuoso Senior Vice President, Technology, Paul Kearney will share efforts to standardise and modernise a more collaborative travel tech environment where systems interoperate smoothly and securely.

Kearney remarked: “In technology, Virtuoso is focused on building systems that support the unique needs of each agency, advisor and partner. Our approach is rooted in the belief that no single solution fits every business, which is why we’re investing in a flexible, interoperable ecosystem that brings together the tools and platforms our network relies on.”

He added that,  at this year’s Tech Summit, Virtuoso is gearing up to highlight in-house innovation and share how it’s making it easier for advisors to spend less time navigating technology whilst also creating space for innovation and new ways of doing business.

Deep-seated discussions

Virtuoso Senior Product Manager Barbara Joseph will also moderate a panel of Virtuoso advisors, in which they will get candid about technology transitions and share real-world lessons from navigating complex system changes.

Drawing from their firsthand experiences managing complex system changes, the panel will provide practical insights and key takeaways designed to help organisations successfully adapt, whether partnering with a startup or implementing a new company-wide platform.

Notable speakers from outside the Virtuoso network are set to take the stage, too, including Rafat Ali, CEO and founder of Skift.

In a fireside chat, Berenstein and Ali will explore the most pressing themes and emerging trends shaping the travel and tourism landscape.

Their conversation will dive into the intersection of travel technology and innovation, covering the impact of shifting geopolitics, evolving consumer behavior, workforce dynamics, demographic shifts and how these forces are influencing the travel ecosystem.

Also, Lisa Cain of Florida International University will discuss how AI supports high-touch service in luxury travel; while Cara Whitehall of Thayer Investment Partners and Michael Zeisser of FMZVentures will provide an investor’s perspective on what is driving the future of innovation across the travel, hospitality and real estate sectors.

Casting the spotlight on risk-takers

Lastly, the Startup Showcase will return with a handful of new businesses that are taking risks to help propel the industry forward.

It will provide a deep dive into what innovation looks like in real-time, allowing attendees to be early adopters and advocates of future technologies.

Participating startups include:

  • Abra Hospitality: Real, lasting brand loyalty is earned by consistently delighting guests with hyper-personalised, one-size-fits-one service. Abra is the first platform that enables hotels to deliver this systematically, effortlessly and at-scale.
  • BeCause: As customer demand for sustainability and certification pressure rise, fragmented systems are holding the industry back. BeCause — an ecosystem hub connecting travel supply, demand and solution providers — is turning sustainability from admin overhead into a commercial advantage.
  • Bonafide: Bonafide addresses the critical issue of Large Language Models (LLMs) frequently misrepresenting travel brand information, which can lead to significant lost sales in the rapidly evolving and growing landscape of generative and agentic commerce. Bonafide solves this by acting as an alignment platform, providing a single, validated source of information to LLMs and generative AI applications, thereby ensuring brands are accurately represented and recommended.
  • Bellboy Robotics: Every great guest experience is built on work no guest ever sees – the room is clean, the towels are fresh and everything is in its place. Bellboy Robotics applies robotics in a way that supports real hospitality, starting with a robot that learns from staff and quietly takes care of the work that makes a room feel ready, all with one goal: to give hotel teams back their time, without lowering standards.
  • Levee: Levee represents the evolution of labor in the hospitality industry, using vision and voice AI to capture real-world operational data, enhance frontline worker performance and enable leaner, more agile hotel teams. It aims to reshape the future of work in hospitality by going beyond task tracking and automation.
