Doha has been officially designated as the GCC Tourism Capital for 2026, a decision endorsed by the Gulf Cooperation Council’s tourism ministers. This accolade follows a strategic bid by Qatar Tourism, highlighting Doha’s blend of cultural authenticity, urban innovation, and sustainability. The bid aligns with Qatar’s national priorities of economic diversification, positioning tourism as a key growth driver.
Saad bin Ali Al-Kharji, Chairman of Qatar Tourism, remarked, “The selection of Doha as the GCC Tourism Capital for 2026 marks an important milestone that underscores the success of our leadership’s strategic vision in establishing tourism as a central pillar of the National Development Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030.” He emphasised the role of this title in enhancing Gulf tourism cooperation and creating new economic opportunities.
Doha’s selection is supported by its advanced transport infrastructure, including Hamad International Airport and Qatar Airways’ extensive network. The city also boasts integrated metro and tram systems, facilitating seamless visitor movement. Additionally, flexible visa policies and a competitive business environment further bolster its tourism appeal.
Qatar’s commitment to sustainability, heritage preservation, and eco-tourism, alongside its growing reputation in medical and wellness tourism, were pivotal in securing this recognition. Future announcements will detail the “GCC Tourism Capital” programme, featuring joint Gulf initiatives and a year-round schedule of events to enhance Doha’s global tourism standing.
