Dubai has introduced a sweeping, citywide one-time contactless check-in system that allows travellers to complete their hotel registration before arrival and walk straight past reception desks. Announced this week, the initiative positions Dubai as the first global destination to deploy a unified, biometric-enabled check-in solution across its entire hospitality sector, from hotels to holiday homes. It marks a major step in the emirate’s ongoing push to elevate digital services under the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33.

Developed by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), the platform lets guests upload identification documents and biometric data just once via their mobile phones. The stored information remains valid until the ID expires, meaning repeat visitors – who already make up nearly one-quarter of Dubai’s annual arrivals – can verify their identity through a quick facial scan on future stays. Speaking about the launch, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, said the initiative reflects Dubai’s long-term vision to embed technology into everyday city services. He noted that the rollout directly supports D33’s objective to strengthen Dubai’s position as a global hub for seamless, digitally enabled urban experiences.

The system is ready for immediate adoption. Hotels and holiday home operators can integrate the tool into their existing apps or websites without major upgrades, DET confirmed.

How it works: From phone to room, no counters required

Once fully implemented, the new process lets travellers complete all check-in steps remotely, including ID verification, significantly reducing wait times on arrival. At participating properties, guests will be able to bypass the reception desk entirely and head straight to their rooms. DET also revealed that the platform could soon power additional touchpoints across a visitor’s journey, including car rentals, consolidating multiple services under a single biometric authentication. The initiative complements Dubai’s broader smart-city systems, such as automated passport-control tunnels at Dubai International Airport, which have already cut processing times to mere seconds.
