A year-long collaboration between SITA and Apple has significantly improved baggage handling for airlines, reducing permanently lost luggage by 90 percent and cutting recovery time for delayed bags by 26 percent.
This integration of Apple’s AirTag and Find My network with SITA’s WorldTracer system allows passengers to share their bag’s location with airlines, enhancing visibility and recovery processes.
The partnership, which began last year, has proven transformative for both passengers and airlines; by enabling location sharing through WorldTracer, airlines can act more swiftly, reducing the number of bags that are never recovered.
Nicole Hogg, Portfolio Director, Baggage at SITA, stated, “When consumer technology and aviation infrastructure are connected in the right way, the results can be transformative.”
A useful tool
Currently, 29 airlines have adopted the Find My integration, with more expected to join.
This system not only reduces lost baggage but also supports faster recovery, crucial during peak travel periods like the holiday season.
The SITA Baggage IT Insights report highlights that global mishandling rates remain low, with 66 percent of mishandled bags reunited with owners within 48 hours, thanks to improved data sharing and automation.
The collaboration likewise underscores the importance of integrating consumer technology with aviation systems to enhance operational efficiency and passenger experience.
As global travel continues to grow, this partnership between SITA and Apple demonstrates the potential for technology to deliver scalable benefits across the aviation industry.
