Japan reports 36.87 million arrivals for 2024

The post Japan reports 36.87 million arrivals for 2024 appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Japan reported an all-time high in terms of foreign tourist arrivals for 2024, registering 36.87 million travellers in the past year.

This surge was fuelled by a weak yen, as well as the resumption of flight routes to Japan following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Likewise, a government report released on Wednesday, 15th January, showed that tourist spending surpassed US$50.8 billion for the first time in history.

According to the Japan Tourism Agency, foreign spending hit a total of 8.14 trillion, mostly allocated to accommodation, shopping, and other expenses.

The 2024 total is significantly higher than the previous record of 5.31 trillion yen set in 2023.

Likewise, the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) reports that promotions scheduled during peak travel periods, including the seasons for cherry blossoms and autumn foliage, contributed to annual visitor numbers from 20 markets setting new record highs.

Cumulative figures from January to November last year had already surpassed the previous full-year high of 31.88 million set in 2019, before the pandemic.

Key source markets

The largest number of travelers in 2024 came from South Korea at 8.82 million, followed by China at 6.98 million, up almost three-fold from 2023, and Taiwan at 6.04 million.

Chinese visitors spent the most amount of money at 1.73 trillion yen, comprising 21.3 percent of the overall total, followed by 1.09 trillion spent by Taiwanese and 963.2 billion by South Koreans.

The largest portion of total spending at 33.6 percent, or 2.74 trillion yen, went on accommodation, followed by shopping expenses at 29.5 percent and dining at 21.5 percent.

Visitors to Japan spent around 227,000 yen per person on average, with Britons spending the most at around 383,000 yen, closely followed by Australians at 382,000 yen and Spaniards at 370,000 yen.

In December alone, the number of visitors to Japan stood at 3.49 million, up 27.6 percent from a year earlier and hitting a record high for a single month.

According to the JNTO, the surge was driven by travel demand during the school holidays, as well as the Christmas and New Year holiday seasons in many countries.

Tourism spending is now second only to the 17.2 trillion yen generated by automobile exports in 2023, surpassing the 5.4 trillion yen from semiconductors and 4.5 trillion yen from steel, according to the Finance Ministry’s trade statistics.

The government aims to attract 60 million visitors a year and increase their annual spending to 15 trillion yen by 2030, but faces issues related to overtourism and labour shortages in the hospitality sector.

Efforts are also under way to attract more high-end travelers as well as encourage visitors to venture beyond major cities by improving access to regional airports.

The governments of the Philippines and Thailand signed a five-year tourism agreement today, 20th January.

This new agreement aims to drive mutual growth in both nations’ tourism sectors.

Philippine tourism secretary Christina Frasco and Thai minister of tourism and sports Sorawong Thienthong signed the Implementation Programme of the Agreement on Cooperation on Tourism in Johor, Malaysia on the last day of this year’s ASEAN Tourism Forum.

The deal is a follow-up to the long-standing partnership established by the original Agreement on Cooperation on Tourism signed on 24th March 1993 in Manila.

The programme, which will run between 2025 and 2030, focuses on tourism cooperation, exchange of best practices, human resource development, and joint tourism promotions and marketing.

Cooperative collaborations

Frasco said the Philippines could tap into Thailand’s success in attracting visitors for cultural tourism and medical tourism.

She added: “In return, Thailand stands to gain from the Philippine expertise in hospitality, where we have earned a reputation for excellence. Additionally, the Philippines is a premier destination for dive tourism as it is home to some of the world’s biodiverse marine ecosystems, and for English language tourism, where our world-class language schools attract students from all over the globe.”

Vietnam and Laos launch cross-border QR payment system

The post Vietnam and Laos launch cross-border QR payment system appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Travel Daily Media.

Laos and Vietnam recently launched a cross-border QR code payment system that has the potential to boost trade and tourism between the two countries.

The launch ceremony was held last 9th January during the 47th Vietnam-Laos Intergovernmental Committee session in Vientiane, with the participation of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his Lao counterpart Sonexay Siphandone.

The initiative is expected to boost tourism, spending, consumption, and people-to-people exchanges between the two nations, while also contributing to the growing trend of finance and banking collaboration within ASEAN.

Who’s involved in this project?

This collaborative initiative between the State Bank of Vietnam and the Bank of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic was initially proposed in 2023 and is supported by the National Payment Corporation of Vietnam (NAPAS) and the Lao National Payment Network (LAPNet), along with the commercial banks of both nations.

Seven Vietnamese banks, namely Vietinbank, BIDV, Vietcombank, Sacombank, TPBank, BVBank, and Nam A Bank, will offer the cross-border QR payment service.

Customers of these banks can use their mobile banking apps to scan Lao QR codes and make payments for goods and services at payment acceptance points within LAPNet’s network of 14 banks in Laos.

How does the system work?

Transactions will be conducted in the local currencies of both countries (LAK/VND), with currency conversion occurring in real time based on the prevailing exchange rate at the moment of payment.

The service is expected to facilitate convenient and seamless transactions between Vietnam and Laos while encouraging the use of local currencies in cross-border transactions.

So far, NAPAS, under the guidance of the SBV, has implemented cross-border payment services using QR codes with Thailand, Cambodia, and now Laos.

The service is also expected to be expanded to other countries such as China, South Korea, and Japan.

The sophisticated uniform introduced at Emirates’ hub reflects the elevated service and attention to detail offered to Premium & VIP customers, as they arrive to Dubai or transit through.

Designed in-house by Emirates’ uniform standards team, there are 3 different variations of the uniform – a stylish A-line skirt suit for ladies, a chic pant suit for ladies, and a tailored 3-piece suit for gentlemen. Just like the cabin crew uniform, the VIP Passenger Services uniform is designed in the shade of warm sand, symbolising the desert dunes of the United Arab Emirates, with a subtle red collar and matching cuffs for ladies. The suit is accented by the iconic Emirates red hat with a gold pin showcasing the Emirates logo, and an elegantly draped cream-coloured chiffon scarf, representing the local culture. The look is completed with red leather shoes and matching handbags where Ambassadors can carry iPads and essential documents for their clientele. Hong Kong Airlines celebrated the first flight between Hong Kong and Australia’s Gold Coast, marking the airline’s return to become the first local carrier to reinstate this highly anticipated route after several years.

To commemorate the relaunch, a ceremony was held at the boarding gate before the inaugural flight took off.

Hong Kong Airlines president Jeff Sun, representatives of Gold Coast and Queensland Airports, as well as senior representatives of the Airport Authority Hong Kong attended the event, interacted with passengers, and presented bespoke gifts to share the joy.

Sun himself joined the cockpit crew to pilot the first flight HX015 to the Gold Coast.

The flight arrived at the Gold Coast Airport at 8:55 am local time, and its passengers were welcomed by a lively traditional lion dance performance arranged by the Gold Coast Airport.

The resumption of the Gold Coast route marks Hong Kong Airlines’ first step back into the long-haul market.

Hong Kong Airlines is progressively expanding its fleet to support a phased expansion of its network, including potential new routes within Australia and a return to the North American market.

Additionally, beyond Vancouver, the airline is also actively exploring the possibility of expanding services to Los Angeles, Seattle, and Toronto to offer passengers a wider range of international travel options.

An invitation to an immersive experience

Hong Kong Airlines chair Yan Bo stated, “We are delighted to have a full flight of passengers on our first voyage, with around 300 travellers coming to experience Queensland’s warm climate and exciting tourist activities. We also look forward to welcoming visitors from the Gold Coast and the Queensland region to Hong Kong during our operation period, inviting them to immerse in the vibrant atmosphere of the Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations and enjoy authentic Hong Kong cuisine.”

Sun remarked: “As one of Hong Kong’s leading full-service airlines, Hong Kong Airlines is committed to providing high-quality, comprehensive services, including flexible baggage allowance options, complimentary inflight meals, and comfortable seats, to ensure that every passenger can enjoy a pleasant journey.”

Queensland Airports Limited CEO Amelia Evans said: “We’re delighted to welcome Hong Kong Airlines’ guests to our beautiful city of Gold Coast and can’t wait for them to experience the best of an Australian summer across the whole region. We hope this connection with Hong Kong will pave the way for longer-term services across our key markets in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, and Mainland China.”

Queensland tourism minister Andrew Powell stated: “This influx from Hong Kong over the Lunar New Year period is an exciting opportunity for Gold Coast, supporting local jobs and the economy.”
