TOURISM Research Australia has released data which it says will be the benchmark against which tourism’s recovery for each state and territory can be assessed.
The State Tourism Satellite Accounts for 2018-19 highlight the importance of tourism to the economy and the report provides a reflection of the tourism industry during a more typical economic environment, before COVID-19 and Australia’s 2019–20 summer bushfires.
Australia’s tourism consumption was worth a whopping $152b during 2018-19, up 6.2% on the $143b figure for 2017-18.
The report highlights the importance of domestic tourism, which made up 74% of this consumption.
NSW claimed the majority of the tourism consumption, accounting for $46.5b (77%), followed by Victoria at $36.1b, Queensland at $34.6 and Western Australia at $15.1b.
South Australia brought in $9b, Tasmania accounted for $4.5b, the NT for $3.1b and ACT for $3.1b.
Data which will measure the effects of the bushfires and the COVID-19 are expected to be released next month.
