Reef combination

THREE Cairns-based Great Barrier Reef tourism operators will operate on alternate days when they relaunch their tours next month.

Passions of Paradise, Ocean Freedom and Down Under Cruise & Dive have agreed to cooperate on the days they run their snorkelling and diving tours to the outer Great Barrier Reef.

The family-owned businesses are all surviving thanks to the JobKeeper program which has allowed them to keep their crews employed and get the boats ready for the resumption of travel.

Operating on alternate days would help keep staff in jobs and ensure the longevity of the three businesses, they said.

Together the companies employ more than 100 local staff, with plans to return to the reef effective from 10 Jul and discounts for locals to help “stimulate backyard tourism”.
