AIRLINES in China last month operated more passenger flights than those in the USA for the first time ever, an indication of the varying stages of recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.
Data from analytics firm Cirium shows that from 01-27 May Chinese carriers completed almost 200,000 segments with passenger-configured widebody, narrowbody and regional jets, versus less than 170,000 for airlines based in the USA.
Cirium said Chinese airlines had recovered to an activity level about 35% below the corresponding period last year, whereas US carriers are down 74% due to the collapse in passenger demand.
The company also tracks the number of passenger jets which have been placed in storage, with the current figure of 15,000 meaning the overall proportion of inactive aircraft is now at 57%.
